In the wake of the recent Material 3 Expressive redesign, the Google Phone app is rolling out a highly anticipated feature: calling cards. This new functionality aims to enhance your calling experience by allowing users to customize how their contacts appear when they call. Upon availability, users will see a promotional message saying, “Introducing calling card: Customize how you see your contact when they call you” prominently displayed at the top of the Home tab.
The calling card feature is not only visible in the Google Phone app but may also prompt users within Google Contacts for a more streamlined editing experience. By tapping into the Phone by Google app, users can navigate to a dedicated “Calling card” page that lists all the customized cards they have created. This page is easily accessible at any time from the Settings menu within the Phone app, conveniently located towards the bottom.
Customizing a contact's calling card is straightforward. After selecting a contact, users can either take a new photo, choose an image from their gallery, or utilize Google Photos to select a picture. The customization options extend beyond just adding images; users can also crop the image and adjust the framing to ensure it looks just right. Additionally, you have the flexibility to personalize the contact’s name at the top of the calling card using a carousel of font and color options.
Once you have set up a calling card, the customized image will be displayed as a fullscreen image during incoming calls and in-call screens. It’s important to note that a solid bottom sheet will still be present for call controls, ensuring that users can easily manage their calls without disruption. Unlike Apple’s implementation or the profile pictures seen in Google Messages, these images are uniquely tailored to you, giving you a personal touch in your communications.
The introduction of calling cards in the Google Phone app represents a significant step forward in personalizing the user experience. With the ability to customize contact appearances, this feature not only enhances individual interactions but also showcases Google's commitment to improving their apps. Keep an eye out for this feature, as it is gradually rolling out to users worldwide.
