Bluesky, the decentralized social network, has announced the rollout of blue checks for “authentic and notable accounts.” This new feature, revealed on Monday, aims to enhance the verification process for users, providing them with a blue checkmark encircled next to their account name. This initiative reflects Bluesky's commitment to fostering a trustworthy environment for its growing user base.
As part of this enhancement, Bluesky will proactively verify accounts that are considered notable, ensuring that these users possess a verified identity. With this verification system, Bluesky aims to distinguish between authentic users and impersonators, a challenge that has intensified as the platform has experienced significant growth in recent months. The verification process will necessitate a review by Bluesky’s moderation team to maintain the integrity of the system.
In addition to individual verification, Bluesky is introducing a “Trusted Verifier” status for certain organizations, such as The New York Times. This status allows these organizations to verify users associated with them, further enhancing the credibility of accounts that receive verification. Users verified by Trusted Verifiers will have a unique scalloped circle checkmark next to their name, differentiating them from the standard blue checkmarks granted to individuals.
One of the significant improvements with this new verification system is its accessibility for independent journalists and creators. Previously, users had to link their accounts to a specific domain to receive verification, which could be challenging for those without direct access to such domains. With the new system, verification becomes more attainable, allowing these users to gain recognition without the constraints of domain linking.
The introduction of blue checks is particularly timely, as impersonation issues have escalated on Bluesky following its rapid user growth. By implementing a clearer verification system, Bluesky aims to protect its users and create a safer online environment. This step is crucial for maintaining the platform's reputation and ensuring that users can trust the accounts they interact with.
At this stage, Bluesky is not yet accepting applications for verified or Trusted Verifier status. However, the platform has indicated plans to open up requests in the future once the verification feature stabilizes based on user feedback. This approach ensures that the verification system is refined and effective before broader implementation.
Users can easily check which organization verified an account by selecting the blue checkmark next to the user's name. Additionally, for those who wish to hide their verification status, there is an option available in the app under Settings > Moderation > Verification Settings, offering users control over their verification visibility.
