The Current State of Foldable Smartphones

Foldable smartphones have become a notable part of the smartphone release cycle, with major brands like Samsung, Motorola, and Google leading the charge. Despite their innovative design and the buzz they generate in a market dominated by traditional smartphones, consumer interest in these devices remains surprisingly low. According to a recent survey conducted by CNET, a staggering 64% of participants expressed that they are neither willing nor interested in purchasing a foldable smartphone within the next year. In contrast, only 13% indicated they are eager to buy one, while another 20% were undecided, and a mere 3% reported owning a foldable device.

The Rise of Foldables

Foldable smartphones made their significant debut approximately six years ago, beginning with the launch of the first Galaxy Z Fold by Samsung and the revival of Motorola's iconic Razr. Since then, other companies like Google, Honor, Oppo, and Huawei have introduced their own versions, ranging from book-style designs to clamshell formats. However, one major player remains absent from the foldable arena: Apple. Rumors suggest Apple has been working on a foldable iPhone for years, collaborating with Samsung Display to develop suitable screens. Analysts, including Thomas Husson from Forrester, believe that Apple's entry into the foldable market could significantly boost consumer interest and legitimize the category.

A Niche Market for Foldables

Despite the variety of foldable options available, these devices still represent a niche market, accounting for less than 5% of total smartphone shipments, as reported by TrendForce. However, sales projections are optimistic, with an IDC report estimating that foldable shipments could soar to 45.7 million units globally by 2028, a substantial increase from 18.1 million units shipped in 2023. Yet, widespread adoption remains sluggish. Ryan Reith, IDC's group vice president for Worldwide Device Tracker, noted that transitioning to a foldable device requires a significant commitment from users, who are often hesitant to make such a substantial change.

Challenges Facing Foldable Adoption

One of the primary barriers to the purchase of foldable smartphones is their high price, which deters 36% of potential buyers. Additionally, 31% of respondents cited concerns about durability, while another 31% were unsure about the advantages of foldables compared to traditional smartphones. A perceived lack of practicality also held back 26% of survey participants. Other concerns included the belief that foldables are too bulky (15%), the absence of preferred brands in the foldable market (10%), and worries about camera quality (8%).

Brand Loyalty and Consumer Hesitance

Even with advancements in foldable technology, such as the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which emphasizes durability and camera quality, high prices continue to be a significant obstacle. For users loyal to brands like Apple, the allure of foldables may not be enough to entice them until their preferred brand enters the market, highlighting the strong influence of brand allegiance on purchasing decisions.

Demographics of Interest in Foldables

The resistance to adopting foldable smartphones appears consistent across various age groups. Millennials show the most enthusiasm, with 19% expressing interest in buying a foldable device within the next year, likely fueled by nostalgia. This is followed by 14% of Gen Z respondents, 10% of Gen X, and 8% of Baby Boomers. Nonetheless, this lack of widespread interest has not deterred manufacturers from exploring the foldable market and attempting to persuade consumers to embrace this innovative technology.

Survey Methodology

The insights shared in this article are based on a survey commissioned by CNET and conducted by YouGov Plc. The total sample size consisted of 2,121 adults, with 2,064 not owning a foldable smartphone at the time of the survey. The data collection took place online between July 1 and July 3, 2025, and the results have been weighted to represent the demographics of all US adults aged 18 and over.
