Apple's highly anticipated iPhone 17 Pro models are rumored to include an innovative reverse wireless charging feature that would enable users to power up other Apple devices. This exciting news comes from the Weibo leaker Fixed Focus Digital, who claims that Apple has been testing this functionality for its latest high-end smartphones. However, whether this feature will be available at launch next month remains uncertain.
This isn't the first time we've heard whispers about reverse wireless charging in the upcoming iPhone lineup. In February, another Weibo leaker, Instant Digital, suggested that Apple was working on a 7.5W reverse wireless charging feature specifically for the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. This capability could allow users to charge other Apple accessories such as AirPods, the Apple Watch, or even a future MagSafe Battery Pack.
The idea of reverse wireless charging for iPhones has been a hot topic for several years. In 2021, Apple took a small step towards this feature by launching the MagSafe Battery Pack designed for the iPhone 12 and newer models. This accessory allowed iPhones to transfer power to the battery pack when connected via the Lightning port, marking the first instance of an iPhone enabling power transfer to an accessory device.
However, in September 2023, Apple discontinued the MagSafe Battery Pack alongside the launch of the iPhone 15 lineup, which transitioned from the traditional Lightning cable to the more versatile USB-C port. The iPhone 15 and subsequent models can now reverse charge devices like the Apple Watch and AirPods at a maximum of 4.5 watts through the USB-C port. Unfortunately, the wireless reverse charging feature has yet to be implemented since the MagSafe Battery Pack's discontinuation.
In 2022, renowned supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo speculated that a revamped MagSafe Battery Pack would eventually transition to USB-C. This prediction has yet to materialize. Similarly, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman mentioned in September 2023 that he anticipates a USB-C version of the MagSafe Battery Pack will return, though he cautioned that users should not expect it anytime soon.
All questions regarding the potential reverse wireless charging feature and other updates will be answered when Apple officially unveils its iPhone 17 lineup around mid-September. An iPhone event is rumored to take place on Tuesday, September 9, where all the latest features and specifications are expected to be revealed.
