Apple Unveils iPhone 17 and iOS 26: Everything You Need to Know

The recent Apple iPhone 17 event showcased a lineup that confirmed many of the rumors circulating prior to the event. Apple introduced the highly anticipated iPhone 17 series, including the all-new iPhone Air, along with several other innovative devices. For comprehensive coverage, you can check out Engadget's live blog from the event.

Following the event, Apple announced that the final versions of iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 would be available for download starting Monday, September 15. This release will coincide with updates to all of Apple's other operating systems, bringing substantial changes to the software on your iPhone and iPad.

What’s New in iOS 26?

One of the most notable updates is the introduction of Liquid Glass, which offers a fresh aesthetic reminiscent of the old Windows Vista design language. This design overhaul is just one of many features we’ve been testing over the past two weeks. For a detailed preview, check out our hands-on review of iOS 26.

Device Compatibility: Will Your iPhone or iPad Support iOS 26?

If you're uncertain about upgrading your device, we can help you determine whether your iPhone or iPad is compatible with iOS 26. Unlike last year, when Apple maintained a broad eligibility list, this year marks a shift, as several models will not support the new operating system. Specifically, the iPhone 8 models and the iPhone X were among the last devices to receive updates in 2023, but in 2025, devices released in 2018 will be left behind.

If your device is on the ineligible list, you won't be able to download iOS 26 when it launches next week. However, Apple is also expected to release iOS 18.7 alongside iOS 26 to address various security issues, according to MacRumors.

iPhones Compatible with iOS 26

According to Apple, the following iPhones will support iOS 26:

iPhone SE (second generation or later) iPhone 11 iPhone 11 Pro iPhone 11 Pro Max iPhone 12 iPhone 12 mini iPhone 12 Pro iPhone 12 Pro Max iPhone 13 iPhone 13 mini iPhone 13 Pro iPhone 13 Pro Max iPhone 14 iPhone 14 Plus iPhone 14 Pro iPhone 14 Pro Max iPhone 15 iPhone 15 Plus iPhone 15 Pro iPhone 15 Pro Max iPhone 16 iPhone 16 Plus iPhone 16 Pro iPhone 16 Pro Max iPhone 16e iPhone 17 iPhone 17 Pro iPhone 17 Pro Max iPhone Air

iPads Compatible with iPadOS 26

For iPads, the following models are eligible for iPadOS 26:

iPad Pro (M4) iPad Pro 12.9‑inch (3rd generation and later) iPad Pro 11‑inch (1st generation and later) iPad Air (3rd generation and later, including M2 and M3) iPad (8th generation and later, including A16) iPad mini (5th generation and later, including A17 Pro)

What If You Want to Keep Your Older iPhone?

If you prefer to keep using your older iPhone that isn't supported by iOS 26, that’s completely understandable. However, it’s important to note that you may miss out on crucial security updates, which could expose your device to malware and other threats. Additionally, some apps may cease to function if they require a newer version of iOS. Most importantly, you won’t be able to enjoy the latest features available in iOS 26.

When Will iOS 26 Be Available?

Apple has confirmed that iOS 26 will be released to eligible devices on Monday, September 15. For those interested in testing the software before the official launch, the public beta is still available for download, now in its release candidate version. However, keep in mind that beta software can carry risks.

Exciting Features in iOS 26

Here are some of the exciting features we can look forward to in iOS 26:

Liquid Glass Design: Experience a revamped home screen with new app icons, dark mode options, and a floating button design for improved aesthetics. Phone App Redesign: Access all your contacts, recent calls, and voicemail messages on one screen, along with a new feature called Hold Assist. Live Translate: Communicate seamlessly in real-time with someone who speaks a different language via phone calls or text messages. Polls Feature: Create polls in group messages to streamline decision-making without the clutter of excessive messages.
