The improved search functionality is part of Apple’s ongoing effort to refine user experience across its applications, including Photos, Music, and TV.
The natural language search feature allows users to search for locations using conversational phrases. For instance, you can simply ask for “Best coffee shops with free Wi-Fi” rather than using traditional search terms. This innovative feature, powered by Apple Intelligence, is set to transform how users interact with Apple Maps, making it more intuitive and user-friendly.
The second exciting feature discovered by Moser is a thermal management capability that aims to protect your iPhone from overheating, especially during turn-by-turn navigation. Currently, Apple Maps keeps your device's display on to ensure that directions are always visible. However, this can lead to overheating issues, particularly when the phone is mounted on a dashboard under direct sunlight and charging.
The new thermal management feature will allow the Maps app to turn off the display during navigation when necessary, helping to cool down the iPhone. While this may not be as glamorous as the natural language search feature, it addresses a real concern for users who frequently rely on navigation, especially in warmer climates.
As of now, neither of these Apple Maps features is available to users in the latest iOS 26 beta. However, there is hope that they will be rolled out before the public launch this fall or shortly thereafter in subsequent updates, possibly iOS 26.1 or 26.2. A recent update noted that the thermal management feature appears to be available not only in iOS 26 but also in iOS 18, while the natural language search upgrade is still pending.
