Washington Commanders veterans reported to training camp on Tuesday, but notable wide receiver Terry McLaurin was absent from the roster. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, McLaurin is currently in discussions for a new contract, which has led to his decision to stay away from the camp.
The 29-year-old McLaurin is entering the final season of a lucrative three-year, $68.2 million contract extension. Over the past five seasons, this six-year veteran has consistently proven himself, achieving at least 77 receptions and 1,002 yards in each year. His performance last season was particularly impressive, as he recorded 82 catches for 1,096 yards and 13 touchdowns, contributing significantly to the Commanders' success, which culminated in a 12-win season and a trip to the NFC Championship Game—the franchise's first appearance since 1991.
McLaurin's absence from training camp aligns with his earlier statements to reporters. Just last Tuesday, he expressed that without progress in contract negotiations, he found it challenging to envision stepping onto the field. As reported by ESPN’s John Keim, McLaurin stated, "Without any progress in discussions, it's kind of hard to see how I step on the field."
Despite his absence, McLaurin has made it clear that he wishes to remain with the Commanders and has no intentions of seeking a trade. He articulated his sentiments regarding fair compensation, saying, "With how the market is today, it conveys what guys of my caliber are deserving of. I feel I fit in that box because of how I've carried myself on and off the field. I don't want to feel like you have to beg for someone to see your worth and value." His frustration regarding the stalled negotiations is evident, as he mentioned his disappointment over the lack of progress toward a new deal.
The Commanders organization recognizes McLaurin's value and is eager to finalize a contract. General Manager Adam Peters highlighted this in his pre-training camp press conference, stating, "Without a doubt, I think everybody in this building values Terry very much. We knew that coming in, and we knew that even more after spending a year with him." Peters also reassured that recent conversations about the contract have taken place and indicated a desire for further discussions. "We're going to do everything we can in order to get a deal done," he affirmed.
While McLaurin's absence from training camp raises eyebrows, it is not uncommon for star players to hold out in pursuit of new contracts. There remains hope that this situation may resolve itself, and McLaurin could eventually return if a contract agreement is reached. For now, as training camp unfolds, the Commanders continue their preparations without one of their key playmakers in the building.
