In light of recent reports by ESPN, which suggested that rival teams expect the Philadelphia 76ers to utilize their coveted No. 3 overall pick in the upcoming 2025 NBA Draft as part of a trade package to acquire seasoned veteran talent, a reliable league source has informed PhillyVoice that the Sixers have given “no consideration” to such strategies thus far.
ESPN's article highlighted notable players like Kevin Durant of the Phoenix Suns and Lauri Markkanen from the Utah Jazz as potential targets for Philadelphia. However, acquiring either of these stars would likely necessitate the inclusion of Paul George in any trade discussion.
Currently, the Sixers seem to be primarily focused on adding young, premium talent to their roster, which already features promising players such as 24-year-old Tyrese Maxey, 21-year-old Jared McCain, and 24-year-old restricted free agent Quentin Grimes. This strategy indicates a shift towards building a younger core rather than leveraging their top draft pick to enhance their veteran lineup.
With approximately five weeks remaining until the 2025 NBA Draft takes place, the Sixers have yet to publicly indicate which prospects are at the top of their draft board. If the current projections hold true, and Cooper Flagg from Duke and Dylan Harper from Rutgers are selected as the first two picks, several other names are expected to be in strong contention for Philadelphia’s No. 3 pick. These include Ace Bailey from Rutgers, V.J. Edgecombe from Baylor, Tre Johnson from Texas, and Kon Knueppel from Duke.
The Sixers may also contemplate the possibility of trading down in the draft to gather additional assets, especially in light of their recent struggles during a challenging 24-58 season. However, as it stands, a bold move centered around the No. 3 pick does not seem to be on the immediate horizon for the franchise.
