SEATTLE — In a recent press briefing at T-Mobile Park ahead of Boston’s matchup against the Mariners, Red Sox manager Alex Cora revealed that he did not view Rafael Devers’ introductory press conference with the San Francisco Giants. When asked about it, Cora simply replied, “No.” This statement came after Devers expressed his willingness to play first base or any other position the Giants may require during his introductory remarks.
During his press conference, Rafael Devers conveyed a strong commitment to the Giants, stating, “Like I said before, I am here to play wherever they want me to (play), and give out my best.” This statement marked a stark contrast to his previous reluctance to play first base when Boston Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow had requested him to try that position after Triston Casas sustained a season-ending injury. Cora was asked about this apparent shift in Devers’ stance. He responded, “He’s with the Giants now. Like I said, we have to turn the page. I’m turning the page, too.”
In further discussions regarding Devers, Giants manager Bob Melvin outlined a flexible plan for integrating him into the team. Melvin noted, “We talked to him a little bit today, and like he said, he goes ‘I’ll play wherever you want me to play, I’ll hit wherever you want me to hit.’” This adaptability will be put to the test as Devers is scheduled to serve as the designated hitter (DH) and bat in the third spot for the Giants. Melvin added that they will gradually introduce Devers to first base by providing him with ground ball practice to ensure his comfort with the position.
In addition to discussing Devers’ readiness to embrace his new role, Cora also addressed a report from Yahoo! Sports that claimed Devers was unhappy with rookie Kristian Campbell for stepping up to volunteer for first base duties. Cora firmly refuted these claims, stating, “Kristian Campbell didn’t ask to play first base. I talked with him about it and he was willing to try it.” This clarification came after Yahoo! Sports suggested that Devers interpreted Campbell’s actions as a diminishment of his own stature within the team.
Cora concluded, “The first time I heard about that was this morning,” dispelling any rumors of discontent among the players regarding position assignments. The focus for both Devers and the Giants now shifts to the upcoming season, with an emphasis on teamwork and flexibility as they navigate the challenges ahead.
