The New York Giants are closely monitoring the Los Angeles Rams' ongoing contract negotiations with quarterback Matthew Stafford. According to ESPN's Jordan Raanan, it is evident that the Giants have prioritized Stafford as their top choice for bolstering their quarterback lineup. The Athletic's Jourdan Rodrigue has also noted that the Rams are expected to meet with Stafford's agent during the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis this week.
The Rams and Stafford's representation aim to negotiate a restructured contract for the veteran quarterback. Last offseason's renegotiations left Stafford with minimal guaranteed money in 2025. Additionally, Rodrigue reports that the Rams are permitting Stafford's agent to engage in discussions with other teams, possibly opening a door for the Giants to enter the negotiations.
NFL Network's Peter Schrager recently highlighted that the primary issue between Stafford and the Rams is financial, with Stafford seeking more than $50 million for the next season. Acquiring Stafford would not be a straightforward deal for the Giants, as it would likely necessitate significant draft compensation. The Giants, who hold assets such as the No. 34 pick outside the 2025 first round, may consider paying a premium for a proven starter.
With Tommy DeVito as their only quarterback signed through 2025, the Giants are exploring their options. The franchise, currently slated to pick third in the upcoming draft, is contemplating adding both a rookie and a veteran quarterback to their roster. General Manager Joe Schoen emphasized the value of having a veteran in the locker room to mentor a young quarterback, mentioning potential draft picks like Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders.
Integrating both Stafford and a young quarterback could enable the Giants to swiftly improve after their 3-14 season, setting a foundation for developing a future franchise quarterback. However, this plan hinges on Stafford's potential departure from the Rams. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Stafford prefers to remain in Los Angeles, putting pressure on the Rams to make a decision soon, as Stafford is due a $4 million roster bonus on March 19.
