The Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix has established crucial safety protocols in light of potential lightning threats as the highly anticipated race approaches. Set to take place at 4 PM local time in Miami Gardens, near the iconic Hard Rock Stadium, the event faces challenges due to forecasts of thunderstorms in the vicinity.
The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), the governing body for the sport, released an official statement outlining the protocols that could lead to the suspension of the race. The stewards, armed with the authority granted under Articles 11.9.2.a and 11.9.3.n of the FIA International Sporting Code, emphasized the importance of public safety. The statement indicated that due to the risk of lightning strikes around the circuit, there is a possibility that the race may be paused to allow all personnel to find safe shelter.
In the event of a lightning threat, specific procedures will be activated to ensure the safe and orderly conduct of the Miami Grand Prix. According to Article 57 of the Sporting Regulations, the race will be suspended, and all cars are required to return to the pit lane and halt in the fast lane as outlined in Article 57.2. Following the return of all cars, teams will receive instructions via the official messaging system to push their vehicles from the fast lane back to their respective garages.
It is critical that garage doors remain open until further instructions are provided. To clarify, any car that was already in the garage when the race was suspended, or any vehicle that is moved from the fast lane to other areas of the pit lane without proper instruction, will be placed at the back of the line of cars prior to the race's resumption, as stipulated in Articles 57.3 or 57.5.
The Miami Grand Prix is not unfamiliar with weather-related disruptions. Just recently, heavy rain wreaked havoc during Saturday's sprint race, leading to significant crashes involving prominent drivers like Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz. Furthermore, the challenging weather conditions forced the cancellation of Sunday’s F1 Academy race, highlighting the ongoing challenges posed by inclement weather on the event schedule.
As the clock ticks toward race day, all eyes will be on the skies and the implementation of the FIA's safety protocols, ensuring that the Miami Grand Prix prioritizes the safety of drivers, teams, and fans alike.
