The Green Bay Packers have submitted a proposal to the NFL’s competition committee to ban the controversial “tush push” play, according to league sources. This move has sparked widespread debate among teams and fans alike.
The play, sometimes referred to as the “Brotherly Shove,” is a specialized quarterback run most famously utilized by the Philadelphia Eagles in short-yardage scenarios. Typically, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts takes the snap from under center and propels forward with assistance from his teammates who push from behind.
The Philadelphia Eagles have incorporated this play into their strategy in recent years. It became particularly notable during Doug Pederson’s tenure as head coach from 2016 to 2020, with Carson Wentz at the helm.
This play has proven highly effective for the Eagles, contributing to their impressive statistics. Last season, Philadelphia boasted the fourth-best fourth-down conversion rate in the NFL at 70.4 percent. They also tied for second in the league with 29 rushing touchdowns, a feat significantly aided by the “tush push.”
Jalen Hurts led all NFL quarterbacks in rushing touchdowns, with 14 total, 13 of which occurred in goal-to-go situations, as reported by TruMedia.
Former Eagles offensive lineman Jason Kelce, who was at the center of the play before his retirement in March 2024, expressed confidence that Philadelphia would adapt their strategy to remain within the rules if the push were to be banned. Regardless, the Eagles have demonstrated their prowess in yard-to-go situations, achieving a 73.9% first-down percentage over the last three seasons. Only the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers have been more effective.
The issue of banning the “tush push” has been a recurring topic within the NFL. It was initially raised by the competition committee before the 2023 season but was not put to a vote. As the debate continues, key figures such as Roger Goodell have publicly stated their neutral stance, emphasizing that no official position has been taken yet.
