Indiana Fever standout, Caitlin Clark, has announced that she will not be participating in the upcoming WNBA All-Star events this weekend due to a right groin injury she sustained on Tuesday. The announcement came via the team on Thursday, marking a significant moment as Clark has been a key player in the league this season.
Clark, who has faced various injury challenges throughout the season, had previously been named a starter and captain for the All-Star Game scheduled for Saturday. This recognition followed her impressive performance, where she garnered the most fan votes, highlighting her popularity and skill. Additionally, Clark was set to make her debut in the 3-point contest, which adds to the disappointment of her absence.
"I'm so excited for Indy to host the WNBA All-Star this weekend. I know this will be the best All-Star yet," Clark expressed in a statement. However, she revealed her sadness, stating, "I am incredibly sad and disappointed to say I can't participate in the 3-Point Contest or the All-Star Game. I have to rest my body." Despite her absence from the court, Clark confirmed that she would still attend the event at Gainbridge Fieldhouse to support her team and assist Coach Sandy Brondello in leading the Fever to victory.
The decision regarding Clark's replacement in the All-Star Game will be made by WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert. Engelbert has previously appointed Kayla McBride of the Minnesota Lynx to fill in for the Atlanta Dream's Rhyne Howard, who is sidelined due to a knee injury. Additionally, Satou Sabally of the Phoenix Mercury has also announced her withdrawal from the game due to an ankle injury.
Following an imaging procedure on Wednesday to evaluate the severity of her groin injury, Clark's status remains day-to-day, according to Fever coach Stephanie White. Unfortunately, Clark's injury led to her missing Wednesday's game against the New York Liberty, marking the 10th regular-season game she has missed this year, with a total of 11 games missed including the Commissioner's Cup final. It's worth noting that prior to this season, Clark had a flawless record, never missing a game in her college or professional career.
Throughout this season, Clark has endured multiple injuries, including two to her left quad and one to her left groin, which have impacted her ability to compete. As fans and teammates rally around the talented player, all eyes will be on the developments regarding her recovery and future participation in the WNBA.
