The U.S. Northern Command has officially deployed the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Gravely to its area of operations as part of a strategic initiative aimed at bolstering border security. This deployment, announced by the Pentagon on March 15, 2025, marks a significant step in the ongoing effort to secure the United States’ borders and territorial waters.
The USS Gravely set sail from Naval Weapons Station Yorktown in Virginia, with a planned course toward the Gulf of America. Chief Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell emphasized the dual importance of securing the land borders and the waters surrounding the United States. “It's not only vital for the United States to have control of our border via land. It's equally important to control our territorial waters,” Parnell stated, highlighting the mission of U.S. Northern Command to protect national sovereignty.
According to Air Force Lt. Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, who serves as the Joint Staff director for operations, the USS Gravely will engage in drug interdiction missions once it arrives in Northcom's area of responsibility (AOR). “The ship will be partnered very closely with the U.S. Coast Guard's drug interdiction mission,” Grynkewich remarked, further underlining the importance of collaborative efforts in combating drug trafficking.
The USS Gravely will also host a Coast Guard law enforcement detachment during its operations in the AOR. This partnership aims to enhance the effectiveness of maritime interdiction efforts. Coast Guard LEDETs (Law Enforcement Detachments), established in 1982, undertake a range of operations, including counter-piracy, military force protection, and humanitarian response, as detailed in a recent Northcom press release.
In addition to the USS Gravely's deployment, Northcom also announced the activation of the Joint Task Force-Southern Border (JTF-SB). This task force will coordinate various Northcom activities and military operations, taking over responsibilities from the Joint Task Force-North. The consolidation of authority aims to streamline efforts to seal the southern border and combat illegal activities more effectively.
Gen. Gregory M. Guillot, Northcom's top officer, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “This is an important step in the whole-of-government efforts to seal the southern border and maintain U.S. sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
The Department of Defense remains committed to defending the homeland and ensuring the territorial sovereignty of the United States. Sean Parnell noted that although there has been a remarkable 93% decrease in illegal border crossings, border enforcement operations will persist until complete operational control of the southern border is achieved.
This comprehensive approach not only enhances national security but also reflects a dedicated effort from various sectors of the government to uphold the safety and integrity of U.S. borders.
