Authorities have identified the suspect involved in the tragic shooting incident at a Midtown Manhattan office building as Shane Devon Tamura. The 27-year-old resident of Las Vegas entered the building wearing body armor and opened fire with a high-powered rifle, resulting in the deaths of four individuals.
Shane Tamura recently resided in a gated community in Las Vegas, where he had been issued a concealed firearms permit by the Las Vegas Police Department. Records reviewed by ABC News indicate that he previously held a work card from the Nevada Private Investigators Licensing Board, although this credential has since expired. The investigation has led several squad cars from the Las Vegas Metro Police to gather at the entrances of the neighborhood believed to be his last known residence.
Tamura completed his high school education in the Los Angeles area, where he was known to be a competitive football player. A former classmate, Caleb Clarke, recalled Tamura as a "goofball" and mentioned that he did not remember him having any significant mental health issues during their time together at Santa Clarita High School. Tamura played as a running back for Grenada Hills Charter during a portion of his high school career.
Despite his seemingly normal high school background, New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch revealed that Tamura had a documented mental health history. Recent investigations indicate that he drove from Las Vegas to New York, during which officers discovered additional ammunition, a revolver, a backpack, and medication in his vehicle. This investigation outlines a troubling journey, showing that his vehicle traveled through several states including Colorado on July 26, Nebraska and Iowa on July 27, and finally arriving in Columbia, New Jersey, at approximately 4:24 p.m. on Monday, just before entering New York City.
Upon entering the office building located at 345 Park Ave., Tamura unleashed gunfire before taking the elevator to the 33rd floor, where he targeted the offices of Rudin Management. Here, he shot and killed one additional person before ultimately taking his own life with what is believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
As the investigation unfolds, police have yet to determine why Tamura specifically targeted Rudin Management and if he had any prior connection to the company. Commissioner Tisch emphasized that understanding his motives remains a priority for law enforcement, as they work to uncover the reasons behind this horrific act.
