On Saturday, opponents of President Donald Trump’s administration are gearing up for significant protests across hundreds of cities. These rallies coincide with the military parade in Washington that celebrates the Army’s 250th anniversary and also marks Trump’s 79th birthday. Dubbed the “No Kings” protests, this movement aims to counter what organizers perceive as Trump’s attempts to inflate his ego during this dual celebration on Flag Day.
The “No Kings” theme was initiated by the 50501 Movement, a national coalition of everyday Americans advocating for democracy and opposing the authoritarian actions of the Trump administration. The name "50501" symbolizes the movement's commitment to engage all 50 states in 50 protests, united under one cause. Previous protests this year have targeted Trump as well as billionaire advisor Elon Musk, who previously led the Department of Government Efficiency, an agency focused on cutting federal spending.
Protesters argue that Trump’s governance resembles that of a monarch rather than a democratically elected official. They express their concerns through powerful statements, highlighting actions they believe have defied courts, deported citizens, and undermined civil rights. The group emphasizes that such actions have primarily benefited Trump's billionaire allies while harming average Americans.
The No Kings Day of Defiance is designed to reject authoritarianism, the prioritization of billionaire interests, and the militarization of democracy in the United States. Organizers aim to offer a robust counter-narrative to the Army’s anniversary celebration, which has been amplified by Trump to include a grand military parade featuring heavy machinery like 60-ton M1 Abrams battle tanks and Paladin self-propelled howitzers.
In a statement from the “No Kings” organizers, they assert, “The flag doesn’t belong to President Trump. It belongs to us.” They plan to demonstrate nationwide on June 14th, emphasizing their message of “no thrones, no crowns, no kings.”
Protests are scheduled to take place in nearly 2,000 locations nationwide, ranging from city blocks to small towns, and even courthouse steps to community parks. However, no protests are planned in Washington, D.C., where the military parade will occur. Instead, the “No Kings” movement will focus on a flagship march and rally in Philadelphia, aiming to draw a stark contrast between their grassroots initiative and what they label as the “costly, wasteful, and un-American birthday parade” in the capital.
Participants of all ages are expected to come together at protest sites for speeches, marching, and displaying signs, while waving American flags. A core principle of the “No Kings” events is a commitment to nonviolence; organizers urge attendees to avoid any weapons and to promote de-escalation during potential confrontations.
The No Kings Day of Defiance is projected to be the largest single-day mobilization since Trump took office. Organizers are preparing for millions of participants to fill the streets across all 50 states and commonwealths, signaling a significant show of dissent against the current administration.
