Robert Hur, a Harvard alumnus and son of Korean immigrants, has a distinguished career in federal law enforcement. He served as a senior official in the Justice Department during President Donald Trump’s first term and was the U.S. attorney for Maryland. Hur is especially notable for his role as the special counsel investigating President Joe Biden's handling of classified documents, where he produced a report that critically assessed Biden’s cognitive abilities just before the President announced his reelection campaign.
Hur's extensive background includes years as a federal prosecutor, where he earned a reputation for being a competent and trustworthy litigator. His appointment as special counsel in January 2023 by then-Attorney General Merrick Garland was seen as a move to ensure an unbiased investigation. Despite his findings that faulted Biden for mishandling classified materials, Hur ultimately chose not to recommend criminal charges, stating that proving intent would be challenging due to Biden's perceived image as a "sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory."
