The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has confirmed that eight migrants, previously convicted of violent crimes, were placed on a deportation flight from Texas to South Sudan on Monday. Acting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director Todd Lyons emphasized that ICE detention is not punitive, stating, "We detain and remove after six months. If we don't have a country that'll take their citizens back, we do have an option to find a safe third country."
On Wednesday, ICE released details regarding the deported individuals, revealing that several had convictions for serious crimes, including first-degree and second-degree murder. Notably, Kyaw Mya, a citizen of Burma, was convicted for committing lascivious acts with a victim under 12 years old. Another individual, Nyo Myint, also from Burma, was convicted of first-degree sexual assault involving a victim unable to resist due to mental and physical incapacity.
