On Tuesday afternoon, New York City Comptroller and mayoral candidate Brad Lander was released from federal custody following his arrest at an immigration court in Manhattan. Lander had attempted to escort a migrant who was being detained by federal officers, sparking a confrontation that captured significant media attention.
Lander, who is actively campaigning in a crowded primary for the Democratic nomination, has been closely monitoring activities at immigration courts in recent days. Reports indicated that many migrants were being taken into custody by federal agents after their court appearances. In response, Lander chose to walk alongside these migrants as they exited the court, a move intended to raise awareness about the challenges they face.
During the incident, Lander was seen standing next to a migrant and locking arms with him when federal officers instructed him to step aside. A scuffle ensued involving Lander, the officers, and other bystanders. Eyewitness videos circulated on social media, showing Lander confronting the officers, insisting, “You don’t have a judicial warrant,” as they attempted to detain the migrant.
As the situation escalated, an officer placed Lander in a chokehold, pushed him against a wall, and ultimately handcuffed him. Lander’s campaign spokesperson, Dora Pekec, later confirmed that Lander had been taken by masked agents and detained by ICE while trying to support the migrant.
After his release, Lander expressed gratitude for not facing charges, stating, “I’m gonna sleep in my bed tonight, safe with my family.” He emphasized the importance of addressing the issue of migrants navigating court proceedings without adequate representation or understanding of the potential for arrest post-hearing. “I don’t have to worry about my due process rights,” he added, reassuring supporters gathered outside the court.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) acknowledged Lander's arrest, with Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin remarking, “No one is above the law.” McLaughlin criticized Lander for allegedly assaulting law enforcement and impeding a federal officer, highlighting a reported 413% increase in assaults against ICE officers. She stated, “It is wrong that politicians seeking higher office undermine law enforcement safety to get a viral moment.”
Brad Lander’s arrest at the immigration court has ignited discussions about the treatment of migrants and the complexities of immigration law enforcement. As the primary election approaches, this incident may significantly impact Lander's campaign and the broader conversation surrounding immigration policies in New York City.
