An investigation is currently underway after a significant fire occurred at the home of Pennsylvania's governor, Democrat Josh Shapiro, early Sunday morning. According to statements from state police, the fire, which is being treated as an act of arson, broke out around 2:00 a.m. ET at the Governor's Residence located in Harrisburg, the capital of Pennsylvania.
Fortunately, the fire was quickly extinguished; however, it resulted in considerable damage to a portion of the residence. Thankfully, Governor Shapiro and his family were present in a different area of the home at the time of the incident and were safely evacuated without injury. The state police have not yet provided any details regarding potential suspects or motives related to the fire.
Photos captured by the Associated Press on Sunday depict broken windows and a damaged door at the front of the residence, highlighting the extent of the damage caused by the fire. These images reflect the severity of the situation and the urgent response required from emergency services.
On the evening prior to the fire, Governor Shapiro, who is Jewish, had shared a heartfelt message on social media, posting a photo of his family's Seder table and wishing followers a happy Passover and Chag Pesach Sameach. Following the incident, he took to social media again on Sunday morning, recounting how he and his family were awakened by loud knocks from state police. “Thank God no one was injured and the fire was extinguished,” Shapiro expressed. “Every day, we stand with the law enforcement and first responders who run towards danger to protect our communities. Last night, they did so for our family — and Lori and I are eternally grateful to them for keeping us safe.”
Governor Shapiro, 51, and his wife, Lori Shapiro, are parents to four children: Sophia, Jonah, Max, and Reuben, who range in age from their teens to early 20s. The family has been a significant presence in the community, and the governor’s residence has been a focal point for their public engagements.
The Governor's Residence, situated by the scenic Susquehanna River, was completed in 1968 and is a striking 29,000 square foot Georgian-style home designed by architect George Ewing. This historic residence has served as a home to Pennsylvania's governors for decades, making it a symbol of the state's leadership.
In light of this alarming incident, the Pennsylvania State Police are offering a reward of $10,000 for tips leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the fire. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward to assist in this ongoing investigation.
