Several types of soap distributed across the United States and Puerto Rico have been recalled due to microbial contamination identified as Burkholderia cepacia. This action was taken in accordance with guidelines from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which reported that multiple lots of four different types of soap are included in this recall. For a comprehensive list that includes product descriptions, lot codes, expiration dates, and reorder numbers, please refer to the official FDA announcement.
The FDA has emphasized the importance of this recall, stating that Burkholderia cepacia can lead to severe infections, particularly in vulnerable populations. The FDA's press release highlighted, “The contaminated products may be used by immunosuppressed individuals or by those caring for immunosuppressed individuals.” In healthy individuals with minor skin lesions, the use of these products poses a risk of local infections. However, for those who are immunocompromised, the infection could escalate into the bloodstream, potentially resulting in life-threatening sepsis.
