On Saturday, British celebrity chef and restaurateur Gordon Ramsay took to Instagram to share some concerning health news. The fiery 58-year-old TV personality revealed that he was recently diagnosed with skin cancer, specifically a type known as Basal Cell Carcinoma, and has undergone a procedure to have it removed. In his post, Ramsay shared a candid photo showcasing a bandage placed over part of his face and neck, alongside another image highlighting a line of stitches extending from his earlobe to the top of his neck.
In the caption of his post, Ramsay expressed his gratitude, stating, “Grateful and so appreciative for the incredible team at The Skin Associates and their fast reactive work on removing this Basal Cell Carcinoma thank you!” He took the opportunity to remind his followers about the importance of sun protection, adding, “Please don’t forget your sunscreen this weekend.” Infusing his trademark humor, Ramsay joked about the procedure, quipping that he did not receive a face-lift, adding, “I’d need a refund.”
Basal Cell Carcinoma is a type of skin cancer that originates in the basal cells, which are responsible for producing new skin cells to replace those that die. According to the Mayo Clinic, this form of skin cancer typically appears on areas of the skin that receive significant sun exposure, such as the head and neck. It can manifest in various forms, including slightly transparent or brown bumps.
The Mayo Clinic notes that “most basal cell carcinomas are thought to be caused by long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight.” To mitigate the risk of developing this type of skin cancer, it is advisable to avoid excessive sun exposure and consistently use sunscreen.
Gordon Ramsay is not only known for his cooking prowess but also for his extensive television career. He is the star behind several popular cooking reality TV shows, including “Hell’s Kitchen,” “Kitchen Nightmares,” and “MasterChef.” His most recent show, “Gordon Ramsay’s Secret Service,” premiered on Fox in May. Beyond television, Ramsay is a Michelin-starred chef who owns and operates over 80 restaurants worldwide, with more than 20 located across the United States.
As Ramsay navigates his health scare, his candid sharing serves as a reminder for everyone to prioritize skin health and to be vigilant about sun protection. With his characteristic humor and gratitude towards his medical team, Ramsay continues to inspire his fans both in the kitchen and beyond.
