The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a crucial advisory regarding certain bags of frozen raw shrimp sold at Walmart. The caution comes amid concerns over unsanitary conditions and potential radioactive contamination linked to shipments from the supplier, BMS Foods, based in Indonesia. This warning is particularly pertinent for consumers who may have purchased these products.
According to the FDA, a radioactive isotope known as cesium-137 was found in a sample of breaded shrimp that was detained at U.S. ports, including major cities like Los Angeles, Houston, Savannah, and Miami. The implicated shipments from BMS Foods never made it to the U.S. market; however, the agency has raised alarms because Walmart's frozen raw shrimp is sourced from the same supplier. The FDA noted that these shrimp "appears to have been prepared, packed, or held under insanitary conditions," which may have led to contamination with cesium-137.
While the levels of cesium detected were approximately 68 becquerels per kilogram, significantly lower than the FDA’s intervention threshold of 1,200 Bq/kg, the agency has opted for caution. The FDA highlighted potential long-term health risks, including the possibility of cancer from low-dose exposure over time, prompting them to issue this advisory. This proactive measure reflects the agency's commitment to public health and safety.
The advisory specifically concerns 2-pound bags of Great Value white vannamei shrimp, all marked with a best-by date of March 15, 2027. These products were distributed to Walmart locations across at least 13 states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, and West Virginia.
The FDA strongly advises consumers who have purchased the affected shrimp to either dispose of the product or return it to the store for a refund. Furthermore, an investigation is currently underway in collaboration with Indonesian seafood regulatory authorities to address the situation. In response to the FDA's advisory, Walmart confirmed to CNN that it has "immediately recalled the product from impacted stores." The retailer is taking steps to ensure customer safety and compliance with health regulations.
For further updates and information regarding the safety of seafood products, consumers are encouraged to stay informed through official FDA channels and reports.
