Eric Dane Opens Up About His ALS Diagnosis on “Good Morning America”

In a heartfelt interview on “Good Morning America,” actor Eric Dane shared the devastating news of his recent ALS diagnosis with Diane Sawyer. The star, known for his roles in “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Euphoria,” revealed that he currently has “one functioning arm.” He expressed the sobering reality of his condition, stating, “My left side is functioning, my right side has completely stopped working.” Dane also mentioned that his left arm is gradually weakening, adding, “I feel like maybe a couple more months and I won’t have my left hand either.”

Diagnosis Journey and Initial Symptoms

The 52-year-old actor was diagnosed with ALS in April after enduring nine months of extensive testing. His symptoms began to manifest about a year and a half ago when he experienced weakness in his right hand. Initially, Dane dismissed the symptoms, believing they were due to overuse from texting. “I didn’t really think anything of it at the time,” he shared with Sawyer. However, as the weakness worsened, he sought help from a series of specialists, ultimately leading to the diagnosis of this life-altering disease.

Understanding ALS: A Progressive Disease

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as ALS, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. As the disease progresses, it weakens muscles, leading to paralysis and impacting a patient’s ability to breathe, speak, and move. Tragically, there is currently no known cure for ALS. Dane poignantly remarked, “I will never forget those three letters. It’s on me the second I wake up. It’s not a dream.”

Support from Family and Friends

During the interview, Dane became emotional while discussing the unwavering support from his wife, Rebecca Gayheart. The couple, who share two daughters, have found strength in each other during this challenging time. “We have managed to become better friends and better parents,” he noted, calling Gayheart his “biggest champion” and “most stalwart supporter.”

Facing New Challenges

Despite being able to walk, Dane expressed concern about his leg strength. He recounted a frightening experience while snorkeling with his daughter, where he realized he lacked the energy to swim back to the boat. “She dragged me back to the boat,” he recalled, visibly shaken. “I was like, breaking down in tears.” He prioritized his daughter’s enjoyment, ensuring she continued snorkeling with a friend while he dealt with his emotional turmoil.

Dane's Continued Passion for Acting

Despite his diagnosis, Dane is determined to continue his acting career. He is set to return for “Euphoria” Season 3, and he has also completed filming for the Amazon Prime Video series “Countdown,” which premieres on June 25. In a recent interview with Variety, he expressed his willingness to take on new roles, stating, “I’m ready and willing to do just about anything.” However, he acknowledged the limitations posed by his condition, saying, “I understand [they] will preclude me from playing certain roles.”

Looking Ahead with Hope

Eric Dane remains hopeful about his future, asserting, “In my heart, I don’t feel like this is the end for me.” He acknowledges the challenges ahead but is committed to fighting against the disease. “There’s so much about it that’s out of my control,” he admitted. Dane's journey with ALS is a reminder of the resilience of the human spirit, as he continues to navigate this difficult chapter with courage and determination.
