Cosmo Jarvis, renowned for his role in FX’s critically acclaimed series “Shōgun,” is set to take on the challenging role of future Soviet leader Joseph Stalin in the highly anticipated film “Young Stalin.” This period thriller will be directed by the talented Georgian-French filmmaker Géla Babluani, known for his captivating works such as “13 Tzameti” and “Money.” The project is being financed by Len Blavatnik’s Access Entertainment, which has previously supported notable films like Jonathan Glazer’s Oscar-winning Holocaust drama “The Zone of Interest” and the recent release “Conclave.”
“Young Stalin” is inspired by the bestselling book authored by Simon Sebag Montefiore, which chronicles the early life of the infamous Soviet dictator during his days as a bank-robbing gangster in pre-revolutionary Russia. The film's screenplay has been collaboratively written by Babluani and Sebag Montefiore, promising a gripping narrative that dives deep into the historical context of Stalin’s formative years.
Set against the backdrop of Imperial Russia’s criminal underworld and the fervor of revolution, “Young Stalin” aims to explore the transformation of a young man into a bloody dictator who would go on to reshape the 20th century through terror, war, and ideological control. The film will also touch upon the largest bank heist in Russian history, as outlined in its logline.
Director Géla Babluani expressed his fascination with stories that dwell in the shadows, stating, “There’s no shadow longer than Stalin’s. This isn’t a portrait of power — it’s a descent into the fire that forged it.” He highlighted the selection of Cosmo Jarvis as the lead actor, emphasizing Jarvis’s ability to portray danger, charm, and the complexities of identity.
The film package is currently being presented to international buyers at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival by Upgrade. Principal photography is scheduled to commence in Tbilisi in July, marking the beginning of an exciting journey into the life of one of history’s most controversial figures.
“Young Stalin” is produced by Sam Taylor of F&ME, known for “Before the Rain,” alongside Archil Gelovani of IFP and Vladimer Katcharava of 20 Steps. The team also includes Alexander Kushaev, with Blavatnik serving as executive producer alongside Danny Cohen and Vince Holden. The production team is rounded out by Rupert Lloyd, Gunda Bergman, and Esko Rips.
As Danny Cohen noted, “Stalin’s early life as a bank-robber is an extraordinary and largely unknown story, driven by revolutionary zeal and characterized by violence, betrayal, and a lust for power.” This film promises to shed light on the lesser-known aspects of Stalin's life, providing audiences with a fresh perspective on this formidable historical figure.
