Renowned musician Billy Joel has announced the cancellation of all his upcoming concerts after being diagnosed with the brain disorder known as normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). The news was shared on Friday via a statement posted on the 76-year-old singer’s official Instagram account.
According to the statement, Joel's condition has been exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to significant problems with hearing, vision, and balance. Under medical advice, Billy is currently undergoing specific physical therapy and has been instructed to refrain from performing while he focuses on his recovery. “Billy is thankful for the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritizing his health,” the statement read.
In his heartfelt message, the Piano Man singer expressed his sincere apologies to fans, stating, “I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience and thank you for understanding.” His commitment to health comes as a priority, acknowledging the importance of taking the necessary time to recuperate.
Normal pressure hydrocephalus is a neurological condition characterized by the accumulation of excess cerebrospinal fluid in the brain's ventricles. This buildup can result in difficulties with walking, cognitive challenges, and loss of bladder control. It predominantly affects individuals in their 60s and 70s and is often misdiagnosed as other disorders such as Alzheimer's disease or Parkinson's disease, as noted by the Alzheimer’s Association.
Joel’s cancellation includes 17 scheduled stops across North America and the UK. These cancellations come nearly two years after the conclusion of his record-breaking residency at Madison Square Garden, which spanned from January 2014 and included 150 sold-out shows—one every month for nine years.
Despite the health challenges, Billy Joel's legacy continues with the impending world premiere of Billy Joel: And So It Goes, a two-part documentary that will open the Tribeca Film Festival in New York next month. Directed by Susan Lacy and Jessica Levin, the documentary will feature unreleased performances, archival photographs, intimate home movies, and exclusive interviews, showcasing the life and career of the Long Island-bred musician.
Joel’s team has reiterated that the 23-time Grammy winner appreciates the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritizing his health. He is grateful for the unwavering support from fans during this challenging time and eagerly anticipates the day when he can once again take the stage.
