On September 24, 2023, the Dolby Theatre hosted a special taping of “Wicked: One Wonderful Night,” offering a unique glimpse into the enchanting world behind the scenes of this beloved musical. As fans gathered in their best costumes, they were treated to an evening filled with unforgettable performances and moments that, while not broadcasted, added to the magic of the night.
Before the cameras began rolling, the audience was invited to participate in an interactive experience that started with the opening number, “No One Mourns the Wicked.” Attendees seated in the orchestra section were given faux tulips and instructed in a choreographed routine involving tossing the flowers into the air at just the right moment to coincide with Ariana Grande’s entrance as Glinda the Good. This warm-up session lasted several minutes and was enhanced by a final rehearsal with dancers, building anticipation for the performance.
The taping of “Wicked: One Wonderful Night” consisted of various sequences filmed out of order, including full musical numbers and scene transitions. Most performances were captured in a single take; however, iconic numbers like “The Wizard and I” and “Defying Gravity” were performed multiple times to ensure a polished version for viewers. Grande and Cynthia Erivo also opted for an extra take of their duet “Happy Days Are Here Again/ Get Happy,” not due to technical requirements but simply out of a desire to share the moment again.
In addition to musical performances, the production captured alternate introductions for various segments of the show. Director Jon M. Chu filmed two different setups for a segment featuring unseen audition tapes from actors, including notable personalities like Khloe Kardashian and Shaquille O’Neal. Ultimately, only the audition clips made it to the broadcast, leaving the audience curious about the other content that was cut.
Throughout the evening, Grande, Erivo, and the ensemble teased the audience with previews of new film clips and musical moments. However, to everyone’s surprise, the promised clips didn’t appear. Grande humorously apologized, saying, “We’re sorry, you won’t actually hear them tonight!” while Erivo insisted, “We want to give you everything — we love you!” The playful atmosphere continued as Bowen Yang and Ethan Slater teased a performance of “For Good,” only to reveal it wouldn’t be shown either, eliciting playful groans from the audience.
During breaks, Bill Sindelar took on the role of emcee, engaging the audience and maintaining high energy levels throughout the night. He mingled with fans, encouraging those in elaborate costumes to showcase their outfits and ensuring that the taping of audience reactions and B-roll footage was lively and entertaining.
The taping lasted over four hours, featuring breaks that allowed the crew to reset for new setups. During these intermissions, the audience enjoyed lively sing-alongs to tracks like Chappell Roan’s “Pink Pony Club,” and even participated in dance sessions led by the emcee. Grande made a surprise appearance during “Thank U, Next,” delighting the audience with her playful interaction.
Marissa Bode, who plays Nessarose, introduced the iconic “Defying Gravity” with an inspiring speech about resilience and authenticity. Although her poignant remarks were edited out of the broadcast, they resonated deeply with the live audience, leading to a sustained cheer that lasted nearly 30 seconds.
In an unexpected twist, Grande selected a young audience member, a 4-year-old boy named Remington, to perform the song “Popular” with her, rather than her usual co-star Erivo. Dressed as Elphaba and equipped with a broom prop, Remington charmed the audience as he danced alongside Grande, creating a memorable moment that showcased the spirit of the evening.
Due to scheduling conflicts, Jonathan Bailey was unable to attend the taping, prompting the team to brainstorm ways to represent his number creatively. Enter Bowen Yang as Fiyero, who brought a fresh perspective to the role. The production team also allowed Slater and Bode to embrace Fiyero’s character, enriching the performance and keeping the spirit of the show alive.
“Wicked: One Wonderful Night” not only celebrated the beloved musical but also demonstrated the creativity, passion, and dedication of its cast and crew, making it a night to remember for all who attended.
