If you're considering entering the United Club, it's crucial to stay informed about the latest changes announced by the Chicago-based airline. On Monday, United Airlines revealed significant updates to its club access policies, which include new membership options, guest policies, and timing restrictions. While these adjustments may not be as extensive as the changes implemented by Delta Air Lines for its often congested Sky Clubs, they are noteworthy and could impact your travel experience. Let’s break down the key details you need to know.
Effective immediately, United Airlines has introduced two distinct tiers of club membership to enhance customer experience:
The United Club Individual Membership provides unlimited access to all United Club locations for the primary member only. This annual membership is priced at $750 or 94,000 miles, with no discounts available for United Premier members. Individual members can also choose to bring guests into the lounge on a one-off basis by paying $59 for a one-time pass per guest.
The United Club All Access Membership extends unlimited access not only to the primary member but also allows entry for up to two guests. This membership plan includes access to all Star Alliance member lounges and select partner locations, effectively granting you de facto Star Alliance Gold status for lounge access. The annual fee for this plan is set at $1,400 or 175,000 miles, with discounted rates available for Premier members:
Premier Platinum members: $1,300 or 163,000 milesPremier 1K members: $1,200 or 150,000 milesGlobal Service members: $1,000 or 125,000 milesFor existing members, these changes will take effect upon their membership renewal, at which point they will need to choose between the Individual or All Access plans.
In addition to standalone memberships, United Airlines has revamped its portfolio of cobranded credit cards, offering a more affordable route to United Club access. Lounge access is now included with the following credit cards:
United Club℠ Infinite CardUnited Club℠ Business CardUnited℠ Presidential Plus℠ Card (currently not accepting new applications)United℠ Presidential Plus℠ Business Card (currently not accepting new applications)It’s important to note that lounge membership through a cobranded credit card offers a unique access policy that includes entry for primary cardmembers, one guest, and any dependents under 18. To unlock the All Access membership tier, cardmembers can either earn Premier Gold status or spend at least $50,000 in eligible purchases on their cobranded card within a calendar year. The annual fee for both the United Club Infinite and United Club Business Cards is $695, making this option an attractive alternative to outright membership purchases.
In line with industry trends, United Airlines has also implemented new time restrictions for lounge entry. Starting May 1, travelers using a one-time pass will be limited to entering the United Club up to three hours before their scheduled departure time. This restriction applies solely to departure flights; there will be no time limits for connecting flights or for members and travelers flying in eligible premium cabins. Additionally, grab-and-go Club Fly locations will no longer accept one-time passes. Be mindful of these changes if you plan to purchase a one-time pass for $59.
The new membership tiers and associated fees may be a shock for those accustomed to United's previous pricing structures. Furthermore, the time limit on one-time passes may be disappointing for travelers who prefer to spend extended periods in the lounge before their flights. However, it's worth noting that these changes are not as drastic as those made by Delta with its Sky Club network, which now restricts cobranded credit card members to a limited number of annual visits. Ultimately, those with select United credit cards will continue to enjoy unlimited access to the United Club network, albeit with one fewer guest until they reach Premier Gold status or spend $50,000 on their card. Once either milestone is achieved, members will enjoy enhanced All Access membership benefits.
