Pope Francis has taken a significant step in the path to sainthood for several individuals. In a recent audience with Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin and Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra, the Holy Father authorized the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints to promulgate various decrees. These decrees concern those who are on the path to sainthood, bringing new recognition to the lives of the faithful who have offered their lives in sacrifice and virtue.
The Holy Father has recognized the "offering of life" of two Servants of God: Fr Emil Joseph Kapaun and Italian layman Salvo D’Acquisto. This category, introduced by Pope Francis in 2017, acknowledges Christians who have freely offered their lives for others, closely following the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Fr Emil Kapaun, born on April 20, 1916, in Kansas, served as a chaplain during World War II and the Korean War. He was captured and died in the Pyoktong Prison Camp. His dedication to ministering to fellow prisoners exemplifies the selflessness recognized in the offering of life.
Similarly, Salvo D’Acquisto, born on October 15, 1920, in Naples, served as a member of the Italian Carabinieri during World War II. He sacrificed his life in Palidoro, Italy, on September 23, 1943, demonstrating the courage and commitment recognized by the Church.
In addition to the offering of life, Pope Francis has recognized the heroic virtues of three other Servants of God:
Michele Maura Montaner, a diocesan priest and founder of the Congregación de las Hermanas Celadoras del Culto Eucarístico, born on September 6, 1843, in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. Didaco Bessi, a diocesan priest and founder of the Congregation of the Dominican Sisters of Saint Mary of the Rosary, born on February 5, 1856, in Iolo, Italy. Cunegonda Siwiec, a lay faithful, born on May 28, 1876, in Stryszawa - Siwcówka, Poland. The Supreme Pontiff has also approved the favorable votes for the canonization of two Blesseds:
Blessed Giuseppe Gregorio Hernández Cisneros, a lay faithful from Venezuela, known for his deep faith and service, born on October 26, 1864, in Isnotú. Blessed Bartolo Longo, a lawyer from Italy who converted and founded the Shrine of the Holy Rosary in Pompeii, born on February 10, 1841, in Latiano.Blessed Bartolo Longo's journey from skepticism to devout faith highlights the transformative power of belief and dedication to the Church.
Pope Francis has decided to convene a Consistory to discuss the upcoming canonizations, with the date yet to be determined. This step signifies an important progression in the path to sainthood for these individuals who have exemplified faith, courage, and dedication.
