After nearly a decade, Sony has officially announced the release of its latest fixed-lens compact camera, the RX1R III. This highly anticipated update follows the RX1R II, which was last refreshed in 2015. The third generation RX1R III maintains the same 35mm full-frame Exmor R sensor as its predecessor but significantly upgrades the resolution from 42.4 megapixels to an impressive 61 megapixels.
One of the standout features of the RX1R III is its integration of Sony’s latest Bionz XR and AI image processors. These advancements enhance the autofocus system, allowing it to track human movement with remarkable precision, focusing accurately on heads and eyes. This makes the RX1R III an ideal choice for portrait and street photography, where capturing fleeting moments is essential.
The RX1R III is set to hit the market in July, with a price tag of approximately $5,099.99. This represents a considerable increase compared to the RX1R II, which launched at $3,300 in 2015. However, to further enhance portability, Sony has opted for a fixed screen on the back, which can no longer tilt up and down. Sony aims to position the RX1R III as a high-quality shooter that is less cumbersome than larger mirrorless options or DSLRs. The RX1R III is equipped with a selection of 12 different quick access Creative Looks that can be customized and applied to both still images and video. Mirroring the capabilities found in the Sony A7R V, this camera’s autofocus system features 693 phase-detection points. Its advanced tracking technology can determine the position of a subject's eyes, even if they are not directly facing the camera or their face is partially obscured.
