The UConn women’s basketball team has triumphantly returned home after clinching the national championship title on Sunday. To celebrate this remarkable achievement, the university is hosting a rally on campus this Monday afternoon. Additionally, the state is planning a grand parade to honor the champions.
The Huskies showcased an impressive performance by defeating last year’s champions, South Carolina, with a score of 82 to 59. This victory marks UConn's first championship win since 2016 and brings head coach Geno Auriemma his 12th national title, solidifying his legacy in collegiate basketball history.
This championship game also marked the final appearance for star player Paige Bueckers, who scored 17 points. Bueckers is anticipated to be the top pick in the upcoming WNBA draft scheduled for April 14. Another standout player, graduate student Azzi Fudd, who announced her return for another year, was honored as the most outstanding player of the tournament. Freshman sensation Sarah Strong contributed significantly to the victory with an impressive 24 points.
The team has just returned from Tampa, Florida, and will be escorted from Bradley International Airport back to the UConn campus. In recognition of their national championship victory, highway signs have been updated to celebrate this achievement. The rally will take place at Gampel Pavilion, where fans and students eager to join the celebration will need to secure a free ticket.
Doors to Gampel Pavilion will open at 4 p.m., and the team is expected to arrive around 5 p.m. Students interested in attending should visit UConnHuskies.com/students to claim their tickets. Fans can also obtain free tickets by visiting UConnTickets.com.
