MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The season for Miami Dolphins' standout wide receiver Tyreek Hill may have come to an abrupt halt following a distressing injury on Monday night. Hill suffered a significant left knee injury shortly after making a catch near the sideline, raising concerns about his future on the field. Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel confirmed that Hill was diagnosed with a dislocated knee and was to remain hospitalized overnight for further evaluation.
An air cast was applied to Hill’s leg as he was taken off the field on a cart, displaying remarkable resilience by cheering and acknowledging the support from fans. The Dolphins reported that he was transported to a nearby hospital for “imaging, evaluation, and observation” of the knee injury. McDaniel expressed admiration for Hill's spirit during this challenging moment, stating, “He was probably in the best spirits of any player that I’ve ever seen (have) such a terrible experience.” Hill reportedly remained focused on his teammates, saying, “I’m good, just make sure the guys get this win.”
The injury occurred with 13:21 left in the third quarter when Hill made a catch and was tackled near the New York Jets sideline. As he planted his left foot, his knee twisted severely, drawing immediate attention from medical personnel who reached his side within seconds. Players from both teams took a knee on the field as Hill received medical assistance, and a cart was quickly summoned. Before being carted off, Hill demonstrated his characteristic humor, which McDaniel noted helped calm his teammates, who ultimately secured a 27-21 victory against the Jets, marking their first win in four games this season.
“That’s just his personality. That’s just who he is,” said quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, emphasizing the positive impact Hill had on the team even in distressing circumstances. The injury has resonated throughout the league, eliciting support from Hill's former teammate and Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who tweeted, “Prayers up man…..” shortly after the incident.
Tyreek Hill, a five-time All-Pro selection and Super Bowl champion with the Chiefs during the 2019 season, had made six catches in the game before his injury, matching his season high. Since entering the NFL in 2017, Hill has amassed an impressive 11,363 receiving yards, the highest in the league during that timeframe. He also ranks fourth in receptions with 819, trailing only Davante Adams, Travis Kelce, and Stefon Diggs, and his 83 touchdown catches stand as the third most in the NFL since 2017.
Defensive lineman Zach Sieler reflected on the injury, stating, “It’s part of the game. It’s a sad reality we live. You have to play every last play like it’s your last.” At 31 years old, Hill is in his 10th NFL season and fourth with the Dolphins. He had led the league with 1,799 receiving yards in 2023, despite facing challenges during his time in Miami, including a tumultuous end to last season that led him to seek better relationships with teammates.
McDaniel noted the importance of Hill's efforts to connect with his teammates during the offseason, saying, “We’ve talked a lot about all the stuff that Tyreek has done this offseason and a big portion is to lead by example and connecting with his teammates.” He added that Hill’s ability to inspire his team in the wake of his injury was evident, showcasing the impact of his leadership both on and off the field.
