Pitt freshman football player Mason Alexander was tragically killed in a car accident on Saturday night in his hometown of Fishers, Indiana. The 18-year-old athlete was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving friends, family, and the entire Pitt community in shock and mourning.
According to the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office, Mason Alexander was a passenger in a 2016 BMW that was driving south on Florida Road. The driver attempted to overtake a 2015 Toyota before a hillcrest, leading to a dangerous maneuver to avoid a head-on collision with an oncoming vehicle in the northbound lane. Unfortunately, the BMW veered off the road and crashed into a tree, subsequently catching fire.
Mason Alexander was not just any freshman; he was a standout cornerback at Hamilton Southeastern High School in Fishers, located near Indianapolis. His impressive skills on the field earned him a spot among the ESPN 300 recruits for the 2025 class. After early graduation, he signed with Pitt in December and was eager to join the team for the upcoming spring practice.
Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi expressed his sorrow in a statement, saying, "I received a call this morning that no parent, teacher, or coach ever wants to get -- the news of the sudden loss of a young and promising life. Our entire program is shocked and deeply saddened to learn of Mason Alexander's passing." He emphasized the profound impact Mason had made during his brief time with the team, stating that Mason was proud to be a Panther. "He will always be a Panther to us," Narduzzi added.
The loss of Mason Alexander has left a significant void in the lives of his family, friends, and teammates. As the Alexander family navigates this difficult time, they will remain in the thoughts and prayers of the Pitt community and all who knew Mason. His legacy as a talented athlete and a cherished friend will not be forgotten.
