The fan who tragically fell from the right-field stands at PNC Park, home of the Pittsburgh Pirates, during the game against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night has been identified as Kavan Markwood. A spokesperson for the South Allegheny School District confirmed his identity to The Athletic, revealing that Markwood is a 2022 graduate of South Allegheny High School, located in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.
In a heartfelt statement, Laura Thomson, a spokesperson for the South Allegheny School District, expressed the community's support for Markwood. “The South Allegheny School District is keeping former student and standout athlete Kavan Markwood in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” Thomson stated. She went on to describe Markwood as someone known for his resilience, strength, and kindness, emphasizing his role as a friend to many and his ability to face challenges with “courage and grace.”
Kavan Markwood remains in critical condition at Allegheny General Hospital following the incident, which occurred during the seventh inning of the game. Reports indicate that he fell from a section of the stands above the 21-foot Clemente Wall in right field, striking the wall before landing on the warning track. Videos circulating on social media captured the moment, showing Markwood motionless as medical crews rushed to provide assistance. He was subsequently transported to the hospital on a stretcher.
Wednesday’s game experienced a delay of several minutes following Markwood's fall but ultimately resumed. The Pittsburgh Public Safety department reported on Thursday morning that the incident is being treated as accidental in nature. Pirates chairman Bob Nutting expressed the organization’s sorrow in a statement, saying, “We are all deeply saddened and truly heartbroken after the terrible accident that occurred last night. It was one of the most difficult moments many of us have ever experienced. We are devastated.”
This incident has shocked the local community, and many are rallying around Kavan Markwood and his family during this challenging time. The Athletics’ Rob Rossi contributed to this report, highlighting the need for ongoing support and awareness regarding fan safety at sporting events.
