Throughout his illustrious career, Tom Brady faced off against Patrick Mahomes in two significant games: an AFC Championship Game and a Super Bowl. Now that Brady has retired from professional football, he has taken on a mentorship role, sharing valuable insights with Mahomes, the star quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs. In a recent interview on the show Up & Adams, Mahomes discussed his thoughts on legacy and the impact of Brady’s words.
During the interview, Mahomes expressed that the idea of legacy has always been on his mind since the start of his career. “I think legacy is always in the back of your mind — even from the beginning of my career,” Mahomes explained to host Kay Adams. He stressed the importance of focusing on the present, saying, “at the end of the day, it’s about taking it a day at a time.” This mindset has been instrumental in his approach to the game, particularly as he recognizes the incredible talent surrounding him in Kansas City.
Mahomes shared that receiving encouragement from a player of Brady's caliber has further motivated him. “Having Tom, a guy like that say that, just motivates me even more,” Mahomes remarked. He also noted that he has had several conversations with Brady this offseason, appreciating the advice he has received. “He’s such a good dude, and I have so much respect for him,” Mahomes said, emphasizing his readiness to absorb any guidance Brady offers.
When asked about the specifics of Brady’s advice, Mahomes playfully responded, “I’ve got to keep the secrets, you know?” However, he did share a core message from Brady: the importance of authenticity. “He always talks about being yourself,” Mahomes noted, adding that both he and Brady believe that teammates can easily recognize when someone is not being genuine or putting in the necessary work. “That’s something that he did every single day, and that’s why guys respected him so much,” Mahomes concluded.
Despite their shared experiences as quarterbacks, the relationship between Mahomes and Brady is intriguing, especially considering Brady’s current role as a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders. Their relationship could raise questions, particularly since Mahomes and the Chiefs encountered a tough loss in Super Bowl LIX. Nevertheless, with Mahomes leading the Chiefs since he took over as QB1 in 2018, the franchise remains a formidable contender for future championships, positioning themselves for a strong showing in 2025 and beyond.
