And so, yeah, unless you guys know something I don’t.” This remark seems to suggest that while speculation is common in the league, the Seahawks are not actively pursuing a trade for Metcalf at this time.
Just three days later, various reports began to surface regarding the future of D.K. Metcalf. Some reports indicated a possible trade scenario involving the Green Bay Packers. Notably, Corbin K. Smith of Emerald City Spectrum ignited the conversation on Friday morning with a tweet suggesting, “One team to keep close tabs on: the Packers.” Smith revealed that a source indicated the Packers had discussions with the Seahawks and potentially had a trade offer that included a high draft pick and a young receiver from their roster.
Further corroborating Smith’s claims, Pete Bukowski of The Leap added, “I can confirm Corbin’s reporting here. A league source told me that GB has been working on this and has an offer they think can land D.K. Metcalf. Then the hope is to trade Jaire Alexander to backfill some of the lost draft capital if they can get it.” This insight suggests that the Packers are serious about enhancing their receiving corps, particularly in light of their need for a proven No. 1 receiver.
However, not all reports align with this narrative. Matt Schneidman of TheAthletic.com disputed the trade rumors, tweeting that “according to a source, there has been no contact or negotiations as of now between the Packers and Seahawks regarding a D.K. Metcalf trade.” This conflicting information raises questions about the validity of the trade discussions and whether they hold any substantial weight.
D.K. Metcalf is currently entering the final year of a three-year, $72 million contract extension, with an impending salary of $18 million in 2025 and a $31.875 million cap charge. If the Seahawks were to trade Metcalf, it would create approximately $10.875 million in cap space, which could be beneficial for the team's future financial strategy.
The Green Bay Packers hold the 23rd overall pick in the upcoming draft, providing them with valuable assets to offer in a trade package. Possible trade candidates could include promising receivers like Christian Watson or Romeo Doubs, which could entice the Seahawks to consider parting ways with Metcalf.
In the 2024 season, Metcalf recorded 66 receptions for 992 yards and five touchdowns, yet he received only 108 targets, marking the lowest target count since his rookie year.
