Raiders veteran Adam Butler recently shared some insightful remarks regarding his former teammate Christian Wilkins following Wilkins’ unexpected release from the team. Butler, who played as a defensive tackle alongside Wilkins last season, took the opportunity to address the critical issue of mental health during a press conference with reporters on Tuesday.
When asked about Wilkins, Butler emphasized the importance of addressing personal struggles, stating, “We’ve pretty much just kind of moved on from the situation. I really don’t want to comment further on it. But I will say whatever you’re going through as a person, athlete, non-athlete, whoever, whatever your struggle is, if you got something going on in life, talk to somebody. Get some therapy, whatever your deal is, it’s your deal.”
Butler continued to advocate for mental health awareness, urging those in need to seek help: “Somebody out there in this world full of billions of people is willing to listen. They’re willing to listen, hear you out, and help you work through whatever you need to work through. Don’t make any hasty decisions. Get help.”
Christian Wilkins was released by the Raiders in a surprising move just one year into the five-year, $110 million contract he signed in 2024. The decision reportedly stemmed from ongoing disagreements between the team and Wilkins regarding his approach to rehabilitation for a foot injury that sidelined him for all but five games of the previous season. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the two parties were also at odds over the necessity of surgery on the injured foot.
In the wake of his release, the NFLPA filed a grievance on Wilkins’ behalf, challenging the decision made by the Raiders. Additionally, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the foot injury was not the sole reason for Wilkins’ departure. Allegedly, Wilkins was involved in an incident where he playfully attempted to kiss another teammate, which reportedly offended the unnamed player.
Following Wilkins’ release, the Raiders issued a statement reflecting their commitment to professionalism both on and off the field: “This franchise has a Commitment to Excellence on and off the field. With no clear path or plan for future return to play from Christian, this transaction is necessary for the entire organization to move forward and prepare for the new season.”
The situation surrounding Christian Wilkins serves as a reminder of the complexities athletes face, both in their professional careers and personal lives. As highlighted by Adam Butler, the importance of seeking support for mental health cannot be overstated, especially in high-pressure environments like the NFL.
