INDIANAPOLIS — The recent NFL Combine in Indianapolis was a remarkable event, especially for offensive linemen. Despite the top 30 of Dane Brugler’s Big Board being heavily focused on defensive front prospects, the offensive linemen made a significant impact. According to the NFL Network, this year’s group of O-linemen was the fastest in combine history, with five linemen clocking in at 4.98 seconds or faster in the 40-yard dash. Notably, Georgia's Jared Wilson achieved an impressive 4.84 seconds.
During the week, numerous scouts expressed enthusiasm about the offensive linemen's performance, particularly the standout prospects. Among them were five players from my previous Freaks List: Minnesota’s Aireontae Ersery (No. 25), Ohio State’s Donovan Jackson (No. 26), LSU’s Will Campbell (No. 32), Arizona’s Jonah Savaiinaea (No. 37), and Missouri’s Armand Membou (No. 39). While Jackson did not participate in the testing, the other four excelled, and Jackson was noted for his impressive interview skills.
Among the top prospects, Will Campbell stands out as a highly regarded player in this draft. Measuring 6 feet 6 inches and weighing 319 pounds, Campbell recorded a 4.98 40-yard dash, a 32-inch vertical jump, and a 9 feet, 5 inches broad jump. Coaches have praised his heavy hands and exceptional run-blocking abilities. Although there are concerns regarding his arm length, measured at 32 5/8 inches, his foot speed is considered sufficient for pass blocking at the NFL level. Impressively, he reached a top speed of 16.47 mph at 10 yards, according to Next Gen Stats.
Armand Membou's stock is expected to soar following his performance at the combine. Scouts appreciate his athleticism and explosive play, predicting he will thrive in an outside zone scheme. While some project him as a guard, NFL personnel believe he could also excel as a tackle. At 6-4 and 332 pounds, he achieved a vertical jump of 34 inches, a broad jump of 9-7, and a 4.91 40-yard dash—truly elite numbers for an offensive lineman.
Jonah Savaiinaea, standing at 6-4 and weighing 324 pounds, surprised many by running a 4.95 40-yard dash, tying for the second-fastest 10-yard split at 1.72 seconds. Aireontae Ersery, at 6-6 and 331 pounds, displayed impressive athleticism with a 5.01 40 time, despite not matching his previous 10-yard split record. His broad jump of 9-3 and vertical jump of 29.5 inches demonstrate his potential as an elite prospect. Notably, Ersery is one of only two other offensive tackle prospects over 330 pounds to achieve a sub-5.05 40 time and a broad jump over 9 feet in the last decade.
North Dakota State's Grey Zabel also attracted attention during the combine. At 6-6 and 312 pounds, Zabel is projected to transition from left tackle to center or guard, owing to his versatility and solid balance. His vertical jump of 36 1/2 inches further bolstered his draft stock, especially since only two other offensive linemen have jumped higher since 2013.
With quarterbacks Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders absent from the combine, other quarterbacks had the opportunity to shine. Ole Miss’ Jaxson Dart emerged as a strong candidate for the QB3 position in the draft. Coaches praised his toughness and performance during the drills. Meanwhile, Louisville’s Tyler Shough piqued interest due to his physical skill set, though concerns regarding his age and injury history linger.
Among the top quarterbacks, NFL coaches expressed more interest in Cam Ward, noting his bigger arm and playmaking abilities. While concerns about his turnover issues exist, one coach highlighted his confidence on the field. Conversely, Sanders’ performance in the Alamo Bowl was disappointing, diminishing his appeal.
Alabama’s Jalen Milroe and Notre Dame’s Riley Leonard are two wildcard quarterbacks worth following in the draft. Milroe is known for his exceptional speed and powerful arm, although his consistency remains a concern. Leonard, another dual-threat QB, has shown potential, with a size and speed combination that could lead him to outperform expectations in the draft.
Texas offensive lineman Kelvin Banks Jr. is projected to be a first-round pick. Although he did not post standout testing numbers, his skills in the run game and quickness were acknowledged by many personnel evaluators. Additionally, Texas standouts Matthew Golden, Jahdae Barron, and Quinn Ewers made headlines during the combine.
Golden, a wide receiver, showcased impressive speed with a 4.29 40-yard dash and exceptional route-running abilities. Barron, a cornerback, ran a solid 4.39 40 and demonstrated versatility in the secondary. Meanwhile, Ewers, despite being a polarizing prospect, had a solid showing and aims to prove his worth as he recovers from an oblique injury.
Colorado star Travis Hunter did not participate in testing but left a lasting impression during interviews. His versatility as a two-way player has coaches excited about his potential at both cornerback and wide receiver. With his instinctive play and ball skills, Hunter is projected to be a top pick in the upcoming draft.
The 2023 NFL Combine showcased an impressive array of talent, particularly among offensive linemen and quarterbacks. With standout performances from players like Will Campbell, Armand Membou, and Jaxson Dart, the upcoming NFL Draft promises to be filled with excitement as teams assess these prospects for their future.
