NFL Draft 2025: Eight Teams Poised for Contention
Find out which eight NFL teams have the most to gain in the 2025 draft and how their selections could change the course of their seasons.

Why They Call it NFL Christmas: The Surprises of the Draft

The NFL Draft is often referred to as NFL Christmas, a day filled with unexpected surprises and potential. The allure of the draft lies in the unpredictable nature of selections, where every pick, be it the first overall choice or pick No. 199, has the potential to spawn the next league legend. However, it is essential to recognize that not all drafts are created equal. Some NFL teams are already positioned for success, while others are still a few drafts away from contention. This year, several teams have a significant opportunity to improve their rosters and ascend the ranks. Here are eight teams poised to become contenders by acing their 2025 draft.

8. New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints, led by general manager Mickey Loomis, have been known for their aggressive approach. While this determination is commendable, it also raises concerns about recklessness. Recently, Loomis restructured Derek Carr's contract and signed Justin Reid in free agency, signaling the Saints' intent to reclaim the NFC South title in 2025. The challenge lies in relying on an aging roster, including 34-year-old Carr, 30-year-old Alvin Kamara, and 36-year-old veterans Cam Jordan and Demario Davis.

The Saints witnessed a glimpse of success last season before injuries plagued their roster. Key players like Chris Olave, Rashid Shaheed, and Erik McCoy will hopefully contribute more in 2025. To further bolster their chances, the Saints could benefit from an infusion of young talent. The 2017 draft class, featuring stars like Marshon Lattimore and Alvin Kamara, transformed the team's fortunes. With four picks in the top 100, including the No. 9 overall selection, the Saints have a chance to replicate that success and potentially reclaim their division title for the first time since 2020.

7. Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos have quietly made significant improvements during the offseason, despite not receiving much attention. Coming off a playoff appearance, the Broncos enhanced their defense by acquiring Dre Greenlaw and Talanoa Hufunga from San Francisco. Additionally, the signing of Evan Engram gives quarterback Bo Nix a reliable target, a move appreciated by head coach Sean Payton.

Although the Broncos are drafting later in each round due to their unexpected success, there remains room for improvement. Payton will likely seek playmakers to provide Nix with additional support, whether that means a top running back or depth at receiver. With their last two first-round picks being Nix and Patrick Surtain II, a continued focus on solid drafting could elevate the Broncos from a pleasant surprise to a formidable force in the AFC.

6. Seattle Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks are attempting to recalibrate with Sam Darnold at the helm. Under the guidance of defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald, the Seahawks' defense is shaping up to be effective, boasting a deep defensive front and promising young players like Ernest Jones at linebacker. The defense could alleviate some pressure on Darnold, similar to how the Minnesota Vikings supported him last season.

However, the Seahawks' offense appears less cohesive. The team signed Cooper Kupp and Marquez Valdes-Scantling to fill the void left by Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf, but this may not be a significant upgrade. The offensive line also needs attention, having ranked among the worst in the league last year. General manager John Schneider has a history of turning to the draft to resolve issues, having previously drafted stars like Russell Wilson and Bobby Wagner.

With five picks in the top 100, the Seahawks have the opportunity to enhance their roster and support Darnold effectively. After three consecutive winning seasons, this draft could be pivotal in pushing Seattle toward contention in the post-Wilson era.

5. Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys understand the importance of the draft, often seen as the lifeblood of the NFL. However, their 2025 free agency efforts were tepid at best, showing only marginal improvements over the previous year. While the Cowboys boast star players, they also face significant gaps in their roster.

Currently, the Cowboys lack a reliable No. 2 receiver behind CeeDee Lamb, and questions loom over the right guard position following Zack Martin's retirement. Additionally, cornerback depth is a concern due to Trevon Diggs recovering from knee surgery and the departure of Jourdan Lewis in free agency. Even with a solid running back duo in Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders, the Cowboys could benefit from securing an additional talented running back through the draft.

With 10 draft picks at their disposal, including Nos. 12 and 44, the Cowboys must strive to find at least one, if not two, All-Pro players to elevate them from mediocrity to contention.

4. Miami Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins have invested heavily in veteran stars, which makes the draft their primary avenue for improvement. Their aggressive strategy, acquiring players like Tyreek Hill and Jalen Ramsey, aimed at building a Super Bowl-caliber team, has paid off with postseason appearances. However, the Dolphins' progress stalled in 2024 due to budget constraints.

If quarterback Tua Tagovailoa can maintain his health, the Dolphins will remain competitive. However, to further elevate their status, strong draft performance is essential. The Dolphins have faced challenges in recent drafts, having traded away key picks, including their first and second-round selections in 2022 and other valuable picks due to league violations.

With 10 total picks in the upcoming draft, including three in the top 100, the Dolphins must capitalize on this opportunity to enhance their roster and push beyond mere wild-card contention.

3. Tennessee Titans

The Tennessee Titans find themselves in a more precarious position than many teams listed here. After struggling with internal conflicts and poor performance over the past three years, the Titans own the No. 1 pick in the draft. However, history shows that a single successful draft can shift a franchise's fortunes dramatically.

With the potential selection of quarterback Cam Ward at No. 1, the Titans could finally find their franchise leader. The team has invested heavily in its offense, and with a solid skill group featuring Calvin Ridley, Tony Pollard, and Tyjae Spears, they have the foundation for success. Moreover, holding the No. 35 pick presents an opportunity to secure a game-changing starter on either side of the ball.

While the Titans may not be immediate Super Bowl contenders, a successful draft could position them to compete for an AFC South title sooner than expected.

2. San Francisco 49ers

Despite some significant offseason losses, the San Francisco 49ers remain a formidable team, featuring seven All-Pros and several exciting young talents. While they may not be the juggernaut they once were, their draft position at No. 11 presents a unique opportunity to bolster the roster.

Historically, the 49ers have thrived in the draft, as seen in their successful 2019 campaign that added Nick Bosa and Deebo Samuel. With needs in the secondary and offensive line, the 49ers must strategically utilize their draft picks to maintain their competitive edge. Adding even one or two future All-Pros could elevate the team back to greatness.

1. Cincinnati Bengals

The Cincinnati Bengals stand out on this list after a bustling March that secured long-term contracts for stars like Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. However, with the pressure of retaining marquee players comes the necessity of hitting on draft picks. The Bengals have struggled in recent drafts, with only a few selections contributing meaningfully to the roster.

To maximize the prime years of their talented core, the Bengals must find starters and Pro Bowl-caliber players in the 2025 draft. With six picks, including Nos. 17 and 49, the Bengals have a crucial opportunity to develop the next generation of talent that will help them remain competitive in the league.
