In a surprising move, the New England Patriots have released Cole Strange, their first-round draft choice from 2022, despite ongoing concerns regarding depth along the offensive line. Cole Strange, a talented guard from Tennessee-Chattanooga, was selected 29th overall in the 2022 NFL Draft by the Patriots, a choice that caught many by surprise. Since joining the team, Strange has started in 29 games, showcasing his potential under the guidance of former head coach Bill Belichick. However, the 2025 training camp under new head coach Mike Vrabel saw a shift in Strange's role. Initially projected as a starter, he quickly fell down the depth chart after just one week, transitioning to work more as a second- and third-unit center.
Strange's performance was impacted by a serious knee injury he sustained late in the 2023 season, limiting him to only three games in 2024. Fortunately, he has returned to full health this season, earning one of the Patriots' four offseason awards. Despite this, the team has chosen to move forward without him, opting to start 2025 third-round pick Jared Wilson from the University of Georgia at left guard.
