Duke Roufus, a former kickboxer and one of the most highly respected coaches in mixed martial arts (MMA) history, has sadly passed away at the age of 55. Roufus, who founded the renowned Roufusport in Milwaukee, died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, as confirmed by his longtime friend and business partner, Scott Joffe.
Renowned within the MMA community, Duke Roufus served as the head coach for several former world champions, including notable fighters such as Anthony Pettis, Sergio Pettis, Tyron Woodley, and Ben Askren. His profound influence on these athletes has solidified his status as a pivotal figure in the sport. The news of his passing has left the Roufusport family and the broader martial arts community in shock and mourning.
Scott Joffe took to Facebook to express his grief, stating, “Duke was more than a celebrated trainer and champion kickboxer -- he was a mentor, innovator, father, and friend whose influence transformed the landscape of mixed martial arts.” Roufus was not only instrumental in coaching athletes at the highest level, but his personal connections with fighters were a defining chapter of his career.
One of the most significant relationships in Duke Roufus's life was with the Pettis brothers. Anthony Pettis, the older brother and former UFC lightweight champion, shared his heartfelt condolences on Instagram, recalling the profound impact Roufus had on his life. “When my dad was killed, you took me in and became my father. Together we did the impossible and made it to the top! I will always make you proud. You've taught me so much. I will make sure your legacy continues on,” Anthony wrote.
