Major League Baseball (MLB) has officially announced that it will implement robot umpires at home plate starting in 2026. This innovative system, known as the Automated Ball-Strike System (ABS), has undergone extensive testing in various settings, including minor league games, spring training, and special events like the 2025 All-Star Game. The league aims to enhance the accuracy and fairness of pitch calls, which have long been a contentious issue among players and fans alike.
The Automated Ball-Strike System is designed to streamline the way pitches are classified as either strikes or balls. Traditionally, these calls have been the responsibility of human umpires, who can often face criticism for making incorrect decisions. In baseball, a pitch is classified as a ball when it lands outside the strike zone, while it is deemed a strike if it falls within. While ABS will not completely eliminate human umpires, it will be utilized when a player challenges an umpire's decision. Each team will have two challenges per game, and only the pitcher, catcher, or batter can initiate an ABS review. It’s important to note that a team will not lose a challenge if the call is successfully overturned. The review process is designed to be quick, taking approximately 15 seconds to complete. Additionally, MLB will ensure that each player's official height is certified to accurately determine the strike zone.
The Automated Ball-Strike System employs 12 Hawk-Eye cameras strategically placed around the field. These cameras are connected to a private T-Mobile 5G network that tracks pitch trajectories with precision. This technology is already utilized in other sports, such as tennis and football, to make critical calls regarding whether a ball is in or out of bounds.
According to MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, the decision to adopt the Challenge format rather than relying on automated calls for every pitch was heavily influenced by player feedback. "The strong preference from players for the Challenge format over using the technology to call every pitch was a key factor in determining the system we are announcing today," he stated. The acceptance of this system may vary among players, influenced by their specific positions and game situations. For example, the strategy may differ significantly in high-pressure moments, such as a full count with bases loaded.
