In a disappointing turn of events for motorsport fans, the FIA Formula 2 Feature Race scheduled for this morning in Melbourne has been officially cancelled due to severe weather conditions. The race was set to commence at 11:30 AM local time, but continuous rainfall led to initial delays and ultimately resulted in the event being Red Flagged.
After a brief attempt to start the race, officials made the difficult decision to cancel the event entirely as heavy downpour persisted, rendering the track unsafe for competition. With no racing laps completed, competitors will not be awarded any championship points. However, ART Grand Prix driver Victor Martins is set to receive two points for securing Pole Position prior to the cancellation.
FIA Formula 2 CEO Bruno Michel expressed his regret regarding the cancellation, stating, “I feel sorry for the fans who wanted to see us race and also for our teams and drivers who came all the way to Melbourne. However, safety takes precedence.” He further elaborated on the challenges faced, noting that efforts were made to proceed with the race, but the track conditions were deemed too hazardous by the drivers, who confirmed their concerns via radio communication.
As the motorsport community shifts its focus, Michel mentioned, “We tried everything we could to make it happen, but ultimately, the right call was to cancel.” He also highlighted the upcoming Formula 2 race in Bahrain, scheduled to take place from April 11 to April 13. This event will provide teams and drivers with another opportunity to showcase their skills in a more favorable environment.
Fans and participants alike will be eager to see how the teams adapt and prepare for the next race, as the FIA Formula 2 championship continues to unfold throughout the season.
