According to sources from ESPN's Adam Schefter, Kirk Cousins is poised to become the starting quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons this Sunday in their matchup against the Miami Dolphins. This decision comes in light of the recent injury to starter Michael Penix Jr., who sustained a bone bruise in his left knee during last week's challenging game against the San Francisco 49ers. As a result, the Falcons currently hold a 3-3 record.
Penix was limited in practice over the past two days and was officially listed as questionable for the upcoming game. On Friday, Falcons coach Raheem Morris commented on the situation, indicating that Cousins had been taking significant practice reps throughout the week, particularly in the latter part of the week. "I'm really confident in our backup," Morris stated, referring to Cousins. "We're going to give Penix every opportunity we can give him. The kid is tough. He's a guy. He's a stud."
The anticipated start for Cousins is particularly noteworthy as it coincides with the 10-year anniversary of his memorable performance in Washington's 31-30 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. During that game, Cousins delivered the iconic postgame quote, "You like that?!" Now at 37 years old, Cousins previously led the Falcons to a strong 6-3 start last season. However, he faced challenges later in the season, throwing nine interceptions during a five-game stretch while recovering from injuries to his right elbow and shoulder.
After Cousins was benched in favor of the rookie Penix in Week 16 last season, Penix has since accumulated a 4-5 record as a starter. Although he has shown flashes of potential, the second-year quarterback has struggled to find his rhythm in the NFL. This season, Penix has completed 61% of his passes, totaling 1,409 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions. His current QBR of 47.7 ranks him 22nd among quarterbacks in the league.
As the Falcons prepare for their crucial game against the Dolphins, all eyes will be on Cousins to see if he can lead the team to victory and improve their overall standing in the league.
