Welcome to The Athletic’s Premier League Predictions Game

We are excited to introduce the first edition of The Athletic’s new Premier League Predictions game. This engaging platform allows our loyal subscribers to team up with a cutting-edge data algorithm, an enthusiastic six-year-old boy named Wilfred, and me, as we put our credibility on the line each week. Together, we will predict the scores for all ten matches in the Premier League, where a correct scoreline earns three points, and a correct result garners one point. To add some excitement, there’s an opportunity for a bonus point for any player who uniquely predicts a scoreline or result correctly.

Starting next week, you will be able to track the standings of this thrilling competition. Each week, we will feature a different subscriber, randomly selected from those who express their interest in participating (find out how to get involved and more general information on our site). However, I will remain a consistent presence throughout the season, alongside the algorithm and our charming six-year-old, Wilfred. As I ponder this experience, I can’t shake off the feeling that The Athletic might be setting me up for a fall. Not only could my football prediction skills be called into question, but my apparent bias against your team may also be laid bare. Let’s put aside those insecurities; we have a whopping three hundred and eighty Premier League matches to look forward to until May 24. So, let’s dive right in!

Subscriber Match of the Week: Manchester United vs Arsenal

This weekend, our featured subscriber is Vaageesh, a devoted Manchester United supporter from Chennai, India. The big question is: will he predict his beloved team to start strong against Arsenal?

Vaageesh shares his thoughts: “I’m writing this just moments after locking my optimistic and pessimistic selves in a bunker. Here’s my rationale: Manchester United’s transition game will neutralize Arsenal’s confidence in possession, leading to a match where neither team possesses the fluidity needed to edge ahead, despite both having improved over the summer.”

His prediction for the match? Manchester United 1-1 Arsenal.

Oli’s Predictions for the Opening Weekend

Oli reflects on a memorable past where Arsenal faced a devastating defeat on opening day in the 1989-90 season against Manchester United. He notes, “If I close my eyes, I can envision a similar scenario unfolding; however, this Arsenal team seems too formidable to be overwhelmed right from the start. I’ll avoid sitting on the fence too often, but I’m leaning towards a lively draw.” His prediction: Manchester United 2-2 Arsenal.

Other Premier League Predictions

Liverpool vs Bournemouth: Oli describes Liverpool’s opening match as potentially awkward, especially against the unconventional Bournemouth, stating, “While I expect a home win, it may not be comfortable. It’ll likely require a late heroics from Mohamed Salah.” His prediction is Liverpool 2-1 Bournemouth.

Aston Villa vs Newcastle: With both teams coming off challenging summers, Oli views this as an exciting matchup with unpredictable outcomes. “Historically, this has been a mixed bag for both sides, but I’m backing Villa this time.” His prediction: Aston Villa 3-1 Newcastle.

Brighton vs Fulham: This matchup has potential for surprises. Despite Brighton’s strengths, Oli is giving Fulham the edge based on their quieter summer in the transfer market. His prediction is Brighton 1-2 Fulham.

Sunderland vs West Ham: Expressing excitement for Sunderland's return to the Premier League, Oli believes this opening game is a great opportunity for them. His prediction: Sunderland 1-0 West Ham.

Tottenham vs Burnley: Oli is uncertain about Tottenham’s season but anticipates a winning start against Burnley. “Facing Tottenham’s attacking line will be a significant challenge for Burnley.” His prediction is Tottenham 2-1 Burnley.

Wolves vs Manchester City: Given Wolverhampton’s struggles during the summer, Oli predicts a difficult match against the formidable Manchester City. His prediction is Wolves 0-2 Manchester City.

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace: Oli is optimistic about Chelsea's start this season despite their recent exertions. He predicts a tough match for Palace, with a final score of Chelsea 2-1 Crystal Palace.

Nottingham Forest vs Brentford: Anticipating a good start for Forest, Oli expects a home win, complemented by a standout performance from Morgan Gibbs-White. His prediction is Nottingham Forest 2-0 Brentford.

Leeds vs Everton: Oli believes that Leeds will thrive in their opening game under the floodlights, predicting a thrilling atmosphere and a win for Leeds: Leeds 2-1 Everton.

Let the predictions roll in as the excitement of the Premier League kicks off! Stay tuned for updates and results as we navigate through this thrilling season together.
