Miami Dolphins offensive lineman Terron Armstead made a significant announcement on Saturday night, revealing his retirement after an illustrious 12-year career in the NFL. The 33-year-old player shared the news during a celebration party he hosted in Miami, where he was joined by several former teammates to honor his next chapter.
Throughout his career, Armstead established himself as a standout player, earning recognition as a five-time Pro Bowl selection. In 2022, he signed a lucrative five-year, $75 million contract with the Dolphins, solidifying his role as the team's starting left tackle for three seasons. During this time, he not only participated in two Pro Bowls but also served as a three-time team captain, showcasing his leadership both on and off the field.
Originally drafted in the third round by the New Orleans Saints in 2013, Armstead came from the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff. He made headlines at the NFL scouting combine, setting a record for offensive linemen with an impressive 4.71-second 40-yard dash. Over the course of his first nine seasons with the Saints, Armstead developed into one of the most respected players in the league.
After joining the Dolphins, Armstead quickly took on a veteran leadership role, guiding a team undergoing multiple coaching and roster changes. His influence extended beyond just the offensive line; he played a critical role in the development of younger players, including offensive linemen Austin Jackson and Patrick Paul, as well as 2024 first-round draft pick Chop Robinson. Robinson expressed his gratitude, stating, “Just getting an offensive perspective, especially against one of the greatest, just learning from him... He gave me tips on how I could work on that.”
With Armstead's retirement, the Dolphins now face the challenge of filling the starting left tackle position. Expectations are high for second-round pick Patrick Paul to step into this crucial role. Miami’s head coach, Mike McDaniel, mentioned at the NFL scouting combine in February that the team was preparing for the offseason as if Armstead would not be returning for the 2025 season.
Armstead's departure marks the end of an era for the Dolphins, who will need to find a way to maintain their competitive edge without their seasoned left tackle. His contributions to the team and the league will be remembered as a testament to his skill and dedication throughout his impressive NFL career.
