LOS ANGELES (AP) — In an impressive display of pitching, Tyler Glasnow and Blake Treinen of the Los Angeles Dodgers combined to deliver eight innings of no-hit baseball during Monday night’s game, culminating in a 3-1 victory over the Colorado Rockies. Tanner Scott, who came in for the ninth inning, allowed the Rockies’ first hit, but the Dodgers held on to secure the win.
Glasnow had an outstanding performance, striking out 11 batters and walking two, while throwing 105 pitches—just one short of his season high. Out of those, 65 pitches were for strikes. This game marked Glasnow’s first career start against the Colorado Rockies, and he showcased his skills effectively. Following Glasnow, Treinen entered the game and swiftly completed a 1-2-3 eighth inning.
Despite Scott's slip in the ninth, where he gave up a double to Ryan Ritter, he managed to retire the next three batters, sealing the game for the Dodgers. With this victory, the Dodgers maintained a slim lead over the San Diego Padres in the competitive NL West race.
In a recent game at Baltimore, Dodgers right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto also flirted with history as his no-hitter was broken up with two outs in the ninth inning. The Orioles capitalized on the moment, rallying to secure a 4-3 victory over the Dodgers. However, the Dodgers bounced back with a strong performance against the Rockies.
During the game, the Dodgers took a decisive 3-1 lead in the seventh inning, thanks to Mookie Betts’ clutch two-out, two-run single to center field. Betts’ hit scored Andy Pages, who had been hit by a pitch, and Shohei Ohtani, who doubled with two outs earlier in the inning. Prior to this, the Rockies had taken an early lead at 1-0, courtesy of Kyle Farmer’s sacrifice fly that brought Jordan Beck home after he walked to start the second inning.
Freddie Freeman played a crucial role in tying the game at 1-1 with an RBI double off reliever Juan Meija in the bottom of the sixth inning. Glasnow’s journey to this game was not without challenges, as he had been scratched from his previous start against Baltimore due to back tightness; however, examinations revealed no significant issues.
This victory marks a significant moment for Glasnow, who has not secured a win since his season opener against the Atlanta Braves on March 31. As of now, his record stands at 1-3 with a 3.41 ERA over 14 starts, accompanied by 81 strikeouts against 32 walks. Notably, his opponents’ batting average of .181 leads all National League starters, and he ranks sixth in the league with an impressive 10.62 strikeouts per nine innings.
The Rockies are currently facing a tough season, having lost 10 of their last 12 games, and their recent defeat against the Dodgers set a franchise record with their 104th loss. This marks the third consecutive season in which the Rockies have recorded 100 or more defeats.
Looking ahead, Rockies right-hander Germán Márquez (3-12, 6.19 ERA) is scheduled to start against Dodgers right-hander Emmet Sheehan (5-3, 3.59) on Tuesday, as both teams continue to navigate the remainder of the season.
