Just one day after the revelation of DK Metcalf’s trade request, Seattle Seahawks General Manager John Schneider addressed this significant development in the offseason. During his weekly segment on Seattle Sports 710, hosted by Bob Stelton and Dave Wyman, Schneider confirmed the news that has captured the attention of fans and analysts alike. While many were eager to discuss the re-signing of Josh Jobe and the decision to release rotational defensive lineman Roy Robertson-Harris, Metcalf's trade request took center stage.
Schneider affirmed both the trade request and that the Seahawks are currently fielding offers from multiple teams. “Everything’s in a very cordial, professional place. Obviously, DK has requested a trade, and we are entertaining that,” Schneider stated. He elaborated, “We are talking to a ton of teams, taking offers, seeing what that looks like, and yeah, here we go.”
In his remarks, Schneider emphasized the organization’s dual commitment to both the Seahawks’ ownership and the player. “The thing to understand here is that our responsibility to Jody Allen, the 12s, first and foremost, is doing what’s absolutely best for the organization, and then what’s best for the player,” he explained. Schneider hopes that both objectives can align for a favorable outcome, stating, “Sometimes that happens, sometimes it doesn’t. Hopefully, in this situation, it does, and that would be great.”
However, he acknowledged the potential challenges, adding, “Worst-case scenario, I mean, we have an amazing, explosive, powerful athlete playing receiver for us again in 2025. So we’ll see where this goes.”
According to reports from The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, the Seahawks are seeking a first- and third-round pick as suitable compensation for Metcalf, who is also looking for a contract extension worth approximately $30 million per year. This financial expectation adds another layer of complexity to the trade discussions, as noted by Field Gulls’ analyst John Gilbert, who highlighted the cap ramifications of trading Metcalf before and after June 1.
When asked about a potential deadline for a trade involving Metcalf, Schneider pointed to the upcoming NFL Draft in April. “Yeah, I would say before the draft,” he responded when queried about the timeline. “You definitely want to know what’s going on before draft time because he’s such an important part of our team, the organization, and the offensive philosophy that these guys want to move forward with on our new coaching staff. We want to know how we’re going to compensate for his loss if he’s not with us.”
In light of the recent news leak regarding Metcalf’s trade request coinciding with Tyler Lockett’s release, Schneider expressed regret. He stated that the timing was “probably not intentional” but that he was “very disappointed” the tribute to Lockett was overshadowed by the Metcalf story. This situation highlights the complexities of managing player trades and public relations in the NFL.
