Diego Lopes is not just another Brazilian fighter known for his unique hairstyle or powerful punches; he represents the unwavering fighting spirit that inspires countless individuals to overcome adversity in pursuit of their dreams. This Saturday, Lopes steps into the Kaseya Center in Miami for UFC 314, where he will vie for the vacant featherweight title against the legendary former champion, Alexander Volkanovski. This event marks Lopes' first time headlining a UFC pay-per-view, a significant milestone in a career that has witnessed its fair share of challenges and triumphs, from Manaus to Puebla.
Manaus, a city renowned for producing exceptional grapplers for over a century, has been home to iconic fighters such as the Gracies, Wallid Ismail, Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, and the great Jose Aldo. Diego Lopes is following in these illustrious footsteps within the world of jiu-jitsu. Despite his natural talent, Lopes quickly realized that while competing in jiu-jitsu tournaments was thrilling, it would not provide for his future. In September 2012, he made the pivotal decision to transition into mixed martial arts (MMA), achieving a second-round TKO victory that set the course for his career.
Within nine months, Lopes showcased his potential with three stoppage victories in a local promotion. However, his journey wasn’t without setbacks, as he faced a split decision loss to Thiago Silva followed by a TKO defeat to Rodrigo Praia. These losses ignited a determination in Lopes to pursue greatness beyond the confines of Manaus. He reflects, “I lost those fights back-to-back and that’s when I realized what I truly wanted for my life.” Lopes made the bold choice to relocate to São Paulo to further his career, inspired by his brother Thiago Freitas, who had faced limited opportunities in the sport.
Upon arriving in São Paulo, Lopes joined Revira Black Team. Under the guidance of Coach Vinicius Reviravolta, Lopes and his teammates faced significant hardships, often sleeping in the gym due to financial constraints. The situation worsened when the gym relocated to Perus, leaving them without a place to stay. Lopes recounts, “We did everything we could to pay the rent and food, but sometimes we had no money.” Their discovery of the Bom Prato restaurant, which offered meals at subsidized rates, became a lifeline for Lopes and his friends, allowing them to train while managing their meager resources.
Despite their struggles, Lopes' dedication never wavered. He recalls how his coach and teammates eventually recognized their plight and began offering assistance. “We didn’t have anything to eat, and little by little people started to help us,” Lopes shared. This community support became crucial as Lopes continued to fight and improve, eventually earning victories in grappling tournaments.
Driven by the desire for greater opportunities, Lopes expressed his willingness to travel globally for his career. His chance came in April 2015, when he was invited to Mexico to coach jiu-jitsu. After competing in São Paulo, Lopes boarded a flight to Cancun, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his life. He initially found work in Playa Del Carmen but soon faced financial difficulties that forced him and his friend Alessandro Costa to return to living in a gym.
Reviravolta connected them to a gym in Puebla, but the reality was harsh. “We lived in the gym and there wasn’t even a shower,” Lopes recalls. They eventually decided to open their gym, but financial challenges led to bankruptcy. Yet, Lopes' determination and fighting spirit shone through as he began to make a name for himself in Mexico, particularly after winning a jiu-jitsu tournament that garnered attention and opened doors for future opportunities.
During a remarkable eight-fight winning streak, Lopes excelled, capturing and defending the LUX Fight League championship. However, the call from the UFC was elusive. Despite facing difficulties and moments of doubt, Lopes was resolute in his goal to succeed in MMA. “My goal was pretty clear,” Lopes stated. “I didn’t want to go back to Manaus, I didn’t want to go back to São Paulo, I didn’t want to go back to Brazil.” Through various odd jobs and sacrifices, he and Costa persevered, always supporting each other through the tough times.
In August 2021, Lopes received a chance to compete for a UFC contract at Dana White’s Contender Series. Unfortunately, an eye poke led to a heartbreaking technical decision loss. However, Lopes refused to be discouraged and continued fighting in local circuits, ultimately securing a spot on the UFC radar with notable performances, including a last-minute opportunity against the formidable Movsar Evloev at UFC 288.
Despite the loss, Lopes' display of talent and resilience captured the attention of fans and officials alike. As Ilia Topuria vacated the featherweight throne, Lopes now stands on the brink of making history himself. “I was able to make my dream come true,” Lopes reflects. “All the sacrifices and hard work have led me to this moment.” With a chance to claim the featherweight title, Lopes is ready to prove that he deserves this opportunity, showcasing the determination and spirit that have defined his incredible journey.
