The Indianapolis Colts' recent decision to name Daniel Jones as the starting quarterback has stirred controversy, especially within the camp of young quarterback Anthony Richardson. Following the announcement, Richardson's agent, Deiric Jackson, expressed his dissatisfaction during an interview with ESPN on Tuesday, indicating that this choice has raised significant concerns about the team's direction.
Jackson didn't mince words when discussing the implications of making Jones the starting quarterback. He stated, “We have a lot to discuss,” highlighting the discontent surrounding the decision. According to Jackson, the choice to elevate Jones and “some previous situations involving Richardson have damaged the team’s credibility.” He emphasized the importance of trust within the organization, saying, “Trust is a big factor and that is, at best, questionable right now.”
Anthony Richardson's journey in the NFL has been a tumultuous one since he was drafted fourth overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. His rookie season was marred by injuries and inconsistent performances, limiting him to just four games before undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery in October. In his second season, Richardson showed promise by participating in 11 games but faced challenges that included a notable incident in which he asked to be sidelined during a Week 8 loss to the Texans, citing the need for a break.
Despite these setbacks, Jackson believes that Richardson has done enough during his limited playing time to warrant more respect and opportunities from the Colts. “When they needed a big play last year,” he pointed out, “whose hands did they put the ball in? Anthony’s.” This statement underscores Jackson's confidence in Richardson's abilities and his potential to lead the team effectively.
In contrast to Jackson's critical stance, Richardson himself adopted a more measured tone after the announcement of Jones as the starter. He stated there were “no hard feelings” between him and the team management, acknowledging the decision made by Colts head coach Shane Steichen. “That’s the decision we’ve got to live with, but no hard feelings, nothing personal,” Richardson said. He remained focused on his personal growth, asserting, “I just can’t let me not being a starter stop me from going and being the person, the player that I’m supposed to be.”
Daniel Jones, who signed with the Colts this offseason after being released by the Giants following a tumultuous five-and-a-half seasons in New York, is set to lead the team as their starting quarterback for the season. Coach Steichen reaffirmed this commitment, stating, “He’s the starting quarterback for the season. I don’t want to have a short leash on that.”
